I don't really think it was actually the money itself that brought the happiness, it was the ability to provide a better life for his son than bouncing around homeless shelters. It brings a level of stability. That's how I viewed it, at least.
Of course, if memory serves, it was based on a true story. They didn't have a whole lot of leeway in how things happened, heh.
