yes, they are similar. Recover has a longer cast time and a higher dose of hp while awaken has no cast time.
I use awaken first to provide some hp quickly and then hit recover to heal me and my party.

Can you increase the HP dosage with Awaken like you can do with heal? I know you cant with recover, but was hoping Awaken would be different.
