There are no other restrictions other than the 10 level requirement. So unless your friend leveled to be within 10 levels each time... it shouldn't terminate automatically.
If anything take a screenshot of the apprentice/master window and if it happens again after you guys relog then take it again and send Fiesta_Help a PM. Or even try their Bug Reporting section.
