There has already been proof that that is false.
If you have ever gotten a chest with an almost full inventory and have tried to open it, you'll notice that you might not be able to. This is because you don't have enough room in your inventory for the items the chest contain. This means that once you get the chest the items are already chosen, holding it longer changes nothing.
