July 4th (1776) is the US Independence day...that is, the day we declared our independence from Great Britain, not the day we won our independence.

my wife is English, and she refers to July 4th as the "anniversary of the revolt of the upstart colonies"

... needles to say we also celebrate Bonfire night on November 5th! "Remember remember the fifth of November"
