Okay, noob question time. What is cooking for?

Also, the wedding stuff looks too sappy. I realize it is supposed to be sappy. But, I am thinking some people will simply get married for the stat boost and warping skill, so they do not need all the hearts coming out of the guy and all the froo-froo flowers, lol.
But, then I am not much into all the froo-froo in real life either.
