The reason people prefer that clerics heal, buff, and revive only is because when the cleric starts smashing mobs, some mages begin to feel insecure, as mages commonly attract the most aggression from a mob. Many clerics do not and cannot react fast enough when 20-30 mobs suddenly lose interest in the tank and all attack the mage and/or archer, as it happens in the 6x battleground.
Also, the idea of "I'm not a heal bot" has led to the new generation of clerics that think they are better for doing damage rather than keeping the party alive. It's not to say that clerics can't do damage; it's to say that clerics are traditionally the healer, and many people feel more secure with them fulfilling that role rather than running off to go hit mobs.
