As far as I'm aware Curse, Disease / Illness and Poison are the only three that cause damage over time. The are also the only three that the Cleric skill Cure can fix. All other debuffs don't damage...

If you're already in the KQ and want to get out just die three times to lose your lives and you'll be warped out. The cancel button is only good for those KQs that don't fill completely in 3 seconds.

I wouldn't shorten the time between KQs at all. There's barely enough time as it is to complete quests or grind before it's time for another KQ.
