Formatting in Word
OK this is driving me nuts. Not sure if it is possible to do this.
I have a word document of 80+ pages. It has several sections (about 10). I want each section to have its own header. However I want the page numbers to be consistent throughout the whole document. If I use section breaks, it can help me give different headers to each section. BUT that mucks up the page numbers - it'll keep counting from 1 in the next section, or the formatting goes funny and I can never get it to be consistent, it'll do it for one page but not the other, etcetc If I don't use section breaks, then I can't have different headers. Any suggestions? T_T_T |
OK i think i worked that out..
Are you using Word 2007? Under Page Layout, there's "breaks", in the drop down you have a "Continuous" under section breaks. With these breaks, you can choose for the header to be not linked to the previous section. But that will keep your page numbers going. When you're in header mode, there's a button in the Navigation box "link to previous", deselect that and you can type watever you like for that current section without changing the one before it.. I've only tested it with 2 sections though, lemme know if more sections give you more problem. |
You can do that but it affects the page numbers.
I think I'll just have to change the "start at.." page numbers for each section to fix it. |
Ugh but that means I can't edit the document anymore. Once I add a page in the middle then everything mucks up T_T
I HATE WORD |
At your page numbers, is the "link to previous" selected?
|
@hessah: new sections can give me new headers, but will also have the page numbers start counting from the previous section for some reason
e.g. Page 5 - section 3 (page number says 5) Page 6 - section 3 (page number says 6) Page 7 - section 4 (page number says 5) Page 8 - section 4 (page number says 6) |
So you've got continous breaks?
I have my headers not linked, and my footers linked and it seems to work. (But the sometimes words like to throw in a bunch of other crap in a big document making it hard to modify) Use your Hide/show thing to make sure you haven't got other page breaks in it.. |

wth it's working now @_@
I swear it wasn't working the 100000x883472389047 times I tried it.... =_= ok fingers crosssed because before it was also printing blank pages I can't see because of section breaks seems to work now! thanks |
Section breaks are evil. I hate them too!
