I do go in costume, but I don't roleplay. It's hard to describe the appeal of a Festival. Wine, women, song? It's all of the good things about being in Ye Olde Times without all of the poverty, death, and smell. I love the terrible accents, the exuberance of the performers (mostly local theatre troupes, which I always like to support...local theatre!), the little random things like someone playing Monty Python music on a lute, everyone just seems to let their hair down and have a good time. You rarely find someone stuck up at a RenFaire. Why? Because they're at a RenFaire, LOL, they know how ridiculous it is.
It's sort of like going to a comic book convention, in a way, just with a different focus. And mostly adults (even though children have been trending in lately...) that like to be bawdy and drink. It's just a great time.
