Illiteracy here we come!

What is with schools these days? Or is it just the schools in my area...

Anywho, my mom was talking to me about the end of the year parent/teacher conferences.

My nephew is going into middle school next year, and his hand writing is HORRENDOUS. It's about the same as a first grader. My mom asked his teacher if they work on stuff like that to improve their handwriting. The lady said they don't worry about that too much because in the future, things will probably be done on computer. And my mom was like "What about job applications?" She had no answer for that. They don't even teach them cursive o.o they show them how to read it, but they do not push them to write cursive.

What about formal signatures???

Pretty sad.

And my 3rd grade nephew. He did an essay and the words were spelled horribly, but he got an A for it. She asked his teacher if his spelling errors are going to be a problem in the future. She said as long as they sounded them out and the word was relatively close, it wasn't an issue. And I'm talking about basic words. I know these are just little kids but still..

...

WTH

Well that's no good at all. Schools shouldn't drop their standards just because computers can supposedly make up for what's lost :/. I feel like they've removed 3 or 4 bricks from the bottom of the academic wall.

I don't trust Microsoft Word to be 100% accurate, either.

Wow... That is rather sad. I agree that we will be using computers/technology more and more but still... kids should continue learning cursive and improving on their handwriting... And learning how to spell. :uhoh:

Looks like we have an interesting future ahead of us... o.o

Random and blahs isn't even in this thread o.o yet.

But yeah. Thats pretty sad. I remember having to know cursive, and our spelling was counted. That was the most frustrating thing about the English part of the school day in elementary school. But, most of the stuff about English, spelling, and grammar, I learned then. So it concerns me how much they push the kids these days.

Spelling and handwriting were major parts for most of my elementary years too. I used to suck at spelling, but I improved each year. And yeah, handwriting gets better with practice too.

Teachers should crack down on it early. :/
