internet speeds

In the US do you guys have really slow internet or something?
Cause I seen a commercial for that qwuest "workspeed" and people
going nuts over a 20 mbps connection... mine runs at 100 and I thought
my internet was semi slow :P

Mine is really slow x.x When I download stuff, I max out at 40kb/s. I used to have what would be considered a nice connection here. I could download 2gig movies an 2 hours. I miss it *0*

Before I switched to cable I had dial up with a decent 48K while at the same time, on the other phone line in this house my husband could not get better than a 26.4K or he got booted. DSL was not deployed out where I live so I tried to get the other phone line upgraded to newer phone cables, but had no luck so we just switched to cable.

Now my direct connected PC states it has a 100M connection while this PC is on a 54M wireless adapter and shows it has a 54M connection. My husbands laptop generally runs around a 52M connection.

I also know someone who had dial up with a pitiful 26.2K connection until he gave up and switched to cable. Now he too runs about 54M.

So I think it varies from people who have nothing better available other than a dial up connection all the way to . . . whatever.

Rural options are limited in the US. Until recently, I only had dial-up avaliable. The highest DSL package available here is 6 Mbps.

I'd like to point out that the 100Mbits you're seeing from Windows is the rating of your ethernet adapter. Same with the wireless. The speed you're actually getting between your house and the rest of the Internet is entirely different.

As for me: 3Mb/512Kb DSL, upgrading to 22Mb/5Mb cable tomorrow

Mine is 1 MBPS ._.

Your line speed is 9.17 Mbps (9168 kbps).
Your download speed is 1.12 MB/s (1146 KB/s).

:/

I dun know about all that stuff - I just click that icon that shows my connection and look in that box and see what speed it says. Sometimes the speed drops to 48M, sometimes to 36M, back to 54M so I assumed since it was not a static number that it was reading or registering something.

Regardless, it runs faster than my dial-up did and the basic intent of my response is to say that there are many variables that determine whether someone has a crappy connection or not - it is not a condition that is synonymous with U.S. Internet connections.

And, for the record, I have told many people that while it says that, there is no way it is running at that speed, but whatever it is running is a major improvement over what I use to have.
