How to eat an Onigiri...

One of the most facinating thing we found in Japan, are these individually wrapped Onigiri (rice balls)

Everyone knows that seaweed gets soggy if u leave it with the cooked rice, so how do they keep it fresh?!

Peel the wrapping down the middle, starting from the top...

...all the way around to the back.

Pull out the plastic on the right.

Then pull out the plastic on the left.

Ta-Da! You've got a fresh tasty onigiri, without soggy seaweed. The plastic is packed so that the seaweed has no direct contact with the rice.

I thought that was ingenious!

Nifty o: I've never had onigiri with rice all around it. But I could see that being convenient, it sucks when it starts falling apart x.x

Just for the record, I have no clue about the possible interactions of seaweed and rice.

LOL The wetness from the rice could make seaweed chewy and soggy (it's meant to be crispy)

so u know ur sushi isnt fresh when u have trouble biting ur seaweed of ur roll.

And u can get these onigiri from 7eleven, so they sit on the fridge all day...

arent all onigiri have rice all around some fillings? and a piece of seaweed?

I used to have severe difficulties opening that thing... gawd.

LOL apparently we had a friend who said "he knows wat he's doing"...

and opened that up without using the steps, and had rice in 1 hand and seaweed on the other hand LOL

(we were lucky enough to be taught by a friend on the first morning that we arrived so we didnt have any disasters LOL)

and it didnt fall apart... the big piece of seaweed acted as a bowl
