Nope, client is all you need to play. It's it's own game, unlike DotA which was a custom map for warcraft.

Does this game require much patience/planning to play? And furthermore, is it a considerably large file? Im considering downloading...

Games usually run at least a half hour, so it does take a bit of patience. The first part of the game is all about leveling your champion, item build, and lane control/harassment.

Oh, no. I've never had longer than a two minute wait for the solo queue. Sometimes practice games can take a little longer to get going, depending on the room owner. If you're running a bot session it's a snap.

It's about 500MB, if memory serves.
