Sorta free. You still need to buy something from the ingame store to unlock trading and be able to receive better items. Lulz.

They made it free because with the in game store, there's no need for people to buy the game when TF2 is always cheap anyways ($5 a lot of the time) and you'll end up probably spending more.

I'm surprised everything isn't "F2P" with a store. Microtransactions make it seem "painless" until you add it all up at the end. Then it hits you.
