Ralath.

49% of your edits do not have edit summaries.

Use more edit summaries.

Or I will eat your soul.

:sigh:

A_Forever 06-24-2008 04:31 AM

Geez D:

Scary much?

Ralath 06-24-2008 05:00 AM

I gettt soooooo tired of writing them.....

Especially when I just write... "changed values" half the time....

Or like yesterday... "add values"

@-@

Edit: I swear I used them more than....... 49%..... @.@

Hyper 06-24-2008 05:24 AM

I was like O____O.

Then I used my deductive skills and realized you were talking about the Wiki edits, not posting edits. /phew

More summaries, Rataleth~!

Triumph 06-24-2008 04:24 PM

More edit summaries.

The gray, italicized pre-generated locationally-dependent "edit summaries" do not count as edit summaries.

:smarty:

EDIT: You owe me lunch, too. As I typed this my lunch burned.

:goaway:

Ralath 06-24-2008 04:37 PM

Minor edits and talk pages don't need edit summaries... do they? ._.

An edit summary is even more important if you delete any text; otherwise, people may question your motives for the edit. Also, mentioning one change but not another one can be misleading to someone who finds the other one more important; add "and misc." to cover the other change(s).

Accurate summaries help people decide whether it is worthwhile for them to check a change. We've found that summaries often pique the interest of contributors with expertise in the area. This may not be as necessary for "minor changes", but "fixed spelling" would be nice even then.

In the case of a small addition to an article, it is highly recommended to copy the full text of this addition to the summary field, giving a maximum of information with a minimum of effort. Put ft in front, as an abbreviation of "full text." This way, readers of the summary will be unlikely to check the page itself as they already know the extent of the edit. These kinds of edits allow users to check Recent changes, Page history and User contributions very efficiently - this also reduces the load on the servers.

If the addition is more than 200 characters, so it does not fit fully in the edit summary box, you should write a short summary of the changes you have introduced into the article. For an addition of, say, 400 characters you can also save time by simply copying that into the summary field. The excess will fall off, and the first 200 characters will usually be acceptable as a crude "summary".

Unfortunately you can copy only one line of text from the edit box into the edit summary box. The contents of further lines can be pasted at the end of the line. Thus, for example, a bulleted "see also" list is cumbersome to put in the edit summary box. One possible workaround for a new list is putting the list on one line, separated by the asterisks for the bullets, copying it to the edit summary box, and then, in the main edit box, putting the new lines before the asterisks.

In addition to a summary of the change itself, the summary field may also contain an explanation of the change; note that if the reason for an edit is not clear, it is more likely to be reverted, especially in the case that some text is deleted. To give a longer explanation, use the Talk page and put in the edit summary "see Talk".

After saving the page, the summary can not be edited--another reason to avoid spelling errors.

In the case of important omissions or errors in the edit summary, you can make a dummy edit just to put the correction in the edit summary.

Hyper 06-24-2008 04:53 PM

Tisk tisk. I lol'd at your editing reason, Triumph.

So how many total 'mystery edits' are there? And what percentage of mine are? O:

Ralath 06-24-2008 05:23 PM

:0

:uhoh:

Those were some effing long guidelines....

Icy 06-24-2008 09:25 PM

Guidelines are so long, what a tough read...

I click on (diff) regardless of what the edit summaries say. For all I know, the edit summary could be lying.

Practically speaking, it's not something you can successfully impose, hehe. Better to have no summary than to have awful ones if you force it through.

Ralath 06-24-2008 09:26 PM

>_>

<_<

I have awful summaries?

Triumph 06-24-2008 09:49 PM

Dunno.

I, however, will force them, because I'm too lazy to press any buttons to read about what people did when I scan the recent changes.

And Hyper has 100% edit summary usage, whereas hyperswoss only had a 47% edit summary usage.

Ralath 06-24-2008 09:51 PM

>_>

Mebbe I should create a new account.

Nub.

I only have 99% use of edit summaries, don't feel bad.

We all make mistakes.

Ralath 06-24-2008 10:30 PM

Boooo~

It'll take me 5000 more perfect edits until I can get up to 99%.

Hyper 06-24-2008 10:46 PM

100%? Hell yes. :sunnies:

Ha, that nub hyperswoss. I've been told that most of his edits were adding icons or table data... Bleh. It starts out with "Icons for _______ added.", then becomes "More icons...", then is "Same.", "Again.", and eventually fizzles out to "_____". xD

...or so I've been told.

Spirit 06-24-2008 10:52 PM

And THIS is the reason, I do not edit the Wiki. I give my info to Icy and Triumph and they can put what they want, haha.

Hyper 06-24-2008 11:06 PM

^LOL! Spirit's being lazy! ;D

Tri, question... If I put a space (Hypothetically. I no do dat.) in the summary bar, will it count as a blank edit, or a summarized one? o:

Hessah 06-24-2008 11:23 PM

THat's not fair... i didnt know about edit summaries till like... only recently...

i bet you my % is like... LOW.....

and Ditto Icy.. that's a BIG guideline... for something simple?

Do we just say "Changed quest reward for lvl 64" as edit summary.. isnt that enough?

Icy 06-24-2008 11:57 PM

I can answer this one for you, whatever you put there shows up as whatever you put there. A blank shows up as a blank (as opposed to nothing at all showing up as nothing at all).

Triumph, he would just say 'Updated.' in the summary.

You should use keywords, and edit sections rather than entire pages when possible; most of the time 2-3 words in the summary will give an indication of the nature of the change. Whoever is interested in the detail can compare difference themselves. You don't want to make people lazy, right?

Mandatory edit summaries are not something that can be forced through.

haha!1

:cheeky:

That's what I was doing last night.

I was copying and pasting all these monsters pictures from the Monster List to their own individual pages--boring work, lemme tell you. Adding an edit just became one task too many. xD

Explain.

Ralath 06-25-2008 12:10 AM

As in... the image is showing up as a red x.

Hessah 06-25-2008 12:12 AM

ur banhammer isnt showing up... just a cross...

unless that's wat its suppose to be...

isnt just "updated" like... the same as not saying anything at all? LOL!!

surely you edited wiki to make an update

Hyper 06-25-2008 12:13 AM

@Hessah: I don't see why making paragraphs of explanations (I've filled the explanation bar all the way before. xD A few times... Rants ftw.) is needed. A few words seems sufficient.

Hessah 06-25-2008 12:18 AM

I was trying to be informative LOL!

and u guys dont want it........... :cries:

Isnt the point of the summary so you know what's been done? Or... something else?

After exhausting all the IPs, you thus create a system in which only registered users may edit. That's... nothing bad, in my view. And if you start banning people for edit summaries, you'll lose all your edit slaves.

Ralath 06-25-2008 03:55 AM

*pat pat*

It's OK Triumph. I know inside, you're just all hammer and no ban. ^_~

Edit zombies work.

For instance, exposing Hessah/Ralath to, say, Hyper, and letting Hyper drive them insane with crazy Vietnam stories or something. We'll throw Righty into the mix too and see if any good results ensue.

I see you've conceded that realistically there is no way to enforce edit summaries.

Triumph 06-25-2008 11:37 PM

There is, but the only tools I have to do so will turn them into edit zombies rather than edit slaves.

Confining individuals in the same room with certain zealous individuals of obscure interest will usually result in the destruction of sanity, rather than the destruction of the will to not edit.

I sound very, very, creepy.

Obscure interest indicating random, little-known topics.

Take Hyper, for example.

If you can get him to ramble for two hours about random stories he's heard, it is good enough to create edit zombies.

Ah, I see now that your solution to solving the problem of imposing edit summaries on others is to impose Hyper on others. Don't force yourself ~ :goaway:

Hessah 06-26-2008 02:16 AM

erm... have we... side track a bit....

is it more important to do the edit summaries... or for us to help contribute to wiki :lost:
