Just call me stupid...

Okay, I am new to this whole gaming thing. I have only played two mmorpgs in my entire life, and those are Toontown (took over that one after my child lost interest) and Fiesta (and that was only for 1 week before they closed CB2). I have never played a fighting game like this one. Hey! But, I rock at all of the Mario games, lol. My child gets mad at me for taking over his video systems, so I had to move on to bigger and better things, hee hee.
With all that said, I am not familiar with a lot of this gaming terminology, so please do not think I am stupid for asking, I just have never heard of a lot of this stuff. Some of it I am figuring out by research, but I thought while I could not play, waiting on OB, that I would learn as much as I could.

What is DPS?
What is grinding?
What is AoE and what is the purpose of it?

I created a Mage as my main character in CB2 and made it to a level 18, and I learned A LOT in just my one week of playing, so please be kind to me in your responses, because I am still learning and this is my first "fighting" game that I have ventured to play. I have read as much as I could, and have looked at just about every post in this forum and others. So, any additional information anyone could give me would be very helpful.

Thanks!!!!

Welcome to Fiesta! =]

DPS is Damage Per Second.

Grinding is when you non stop level for hrs without taking a break.

AoE is Area of Effect meaning that a skill can hit all monsters in a certain area. Only some skills are AoE.

Edit: Oh I am going to add Kiting as well.
Kiting is usually done by archer, but mages can do it as well. Its when you attack a monster from a distance then when the monster comes near you run back to avoid damage then start shooting again. Kiting is not recommended for Fiesta though since most monster are either the same speed as you or faster.

chinhchinh 08-23-2007 01:47 AM

First of all, welcome to FiestaFan and enjoy your stay here.

Now, for the questions;
What is DPS?
DPS is Damage Per Second, the rate of how much damage you inflict to a certain monster over a period of time, which is seconds. Mages and Archers have the highest DPS in FiestaOnline.

What is grinding?
Grinding is when you train/level hardcore. When you grind, hunger and thirst is disregarded over long periods of time, though I may be exaggerating quite a bit.

What is AoE and what is the purpose of it?
AoE means Area of Effect. AoE skills focus on more than one object/monster, they have an area range where their effect takes place, whether it be damage or a de-buff.

Edit: Was too late. ;3;

Kamilah 08-23-2007 01:50 AM

I think you explained them better than me anyway! ^~

Hope you enjoy Fiesta and these forums and enjoy your stay.

Spirit 08-23-2007 03:09 AM

Thanks!!!

That brings up another question..... what is De-buffing?

Kamilah 08-23-2007 03:10 AM

The opposite of buffing. You use them on monsters to decrease their defense/atk/etc depending on the debuff.

fullback 08-23-2007 03:12 AM

Monsters can also cast them on you.

Triumph 08-23-2007 03:41 AM

As a side note:

Debuffs can for the most part be dispelled by mages, with the Dispel skill learned at level 25. Higher tier debuffs will not be removed until you upgrade Dispel.

Clerics can cure most bleeding and poison debuffs, unless they are higher tier.

Even though all the questions has been answered, I want to say hi anyway since it's your first thread here. xD How awesome would it be if my mum plays mmorpgs!

Ok sorry back on topic now.

Dynamics 08-23-2007 08:46 AM

Shouldn't call yourself stupid just because you don't understand some gaming lingo. It's okay not to know these things, so I'm requesting a change in your thread title =].

All of your questions have been answered, so I've just got to say welcome to the community. If you've got any other questions you're more than welcome to post them here.

Hi! Southern Majesty's mom here! I wish all moms would play games - keeps us young (if not for real, then at least in our hearts, hee hee)!

Hello Your Majesty. Thanks for getting these answers for us. I agree with Dynamics - don't call yourself stupid. You are far from it (can you say i-dot?)

Oh, and, BTW, you left full-time college student out of your signature.

Love ya, Mom

My apologies if I sound rude, but are you really the mother of S_M? If that is true, then does that mean you're a grandmother? Sorry but I'm just very confused at the moment.
BLAAAHS IS A NUB-PIGGY ;3;

Can i still call you stupid? :D................

No apology needed - I don't think it's rude to ask.

It is true, and yes, it does mean that I am also a grandmother. My oldest grandchild is 12 and my youngest grandchild is 2 & 1/2.

If that is confusing it may be because I'm not the typical grandmother type person. You see, first, I am a young grandmother, and second, I just never really grew up. I started playing electronic games with Pong, from there to Atari and on and on. In fact, S_M and her brother had to fight me to get the PC (DOS OS only - pre 386 models) to play the first Zelda game.

Hope that doesn't cause anyone to reject me just cuz I carry real-life Granny title - my in-game preferred title was Mara Executioner! Woo Hoo!!
(OK - gotta go to work before I become unemployed Mara Executioner!)

Blaaaaaaaah 08-23-2007 12:17 PM

Lady-Loki, you are awesome. My idol. My hero. Everything. Seriously.

NavMan 08-23-2007 01:00 PM

Whoa, two generations playing Fiesta here, three if you can get the oldest grandchild to play. That is so awesome.

Ha! Ha!, One step ahead of you!! My son created a warrior in CB2, and under my watchful eye, made it to a level 11. So we do have 3 generations playing Fiesta. Guess you could say its a family tradition to become addicted to games, lol.

I added full-time college student to my signature.
Yes, after many, many, many years I decided to go back to college to obtain my degree, woo hoo!! Only 11 weeks left for my Associate, then two more years for my Bachelor!!!

And she must have passed this gene on to me, because my son and I fought over all of his gaming systems and the computer so much that we ended up buying him is own computer, so we wouldn't fight anymore. It is a shame when your son tells you that you need to get off the computer and do your homework, and it is really just his way of getting "play" time in on the computer. And it is just plain SAD when I threaten to ground him so that I have more playing time, lol.

Run!! Run fast!! No, I am a very easy going person, who can laugh at myself and make fun of myself. I am also my biggest critic. So, if I do anything stupid in the game, trust me!! I have already said worse to myself than anyone could possibly say to me.

lol, maybe my question should have been, what is buffing???

And thanks to all of those that have welcomed me and helped me out!! I am so excited about OB, that I took half a day off work to go home and get housework, homework, and everything else out of the way so I can play all night once we can start playing again, lol. Told you I was addicted.

Blaaaaaaaah 08-23-2007 01:36 PM

Wow does your son go on these forums? =)

A buff is spell casted on you that will increase your stats to help you (e.g. increase defense, increase power, increase accuracy etc etc), so a debuff would be something that makes your stats go down (e.g. decreased defense, decreased power, decreased accuracy etc etc).

Hope that helped. =)

Edit: @Nav - WTH! She quoted you LOL!

*light bulb just went VERY bright* Got it!!!! Thanks. And no, my son does not come on the forums. I can still control a lot of what he does, and when something is as open as the forums, I have to put on my mother hat, but I will read him things that I think would help him or he might want to hear. Besides, he wouldn't have the patience to sit and read posts and take the time to respond, he is all about killing mobs.

MMO Lingo

Hi Majesty I think asking is exactly what makes you not stupid!! :p

Lingo and terminology varies a little from game to game, so you might hear things being said differently, let me see if i can add my two cents, maybe you've heard some of these other terms.

Grinding: I think it's been explained, but i've also seen people calling it partying. Like as in "Want to party?" In FFXI Online, no one said grind ._. dunno why.

You'll see a few other acronyms and terms that usually mean the same thing across all MMOs

LFP - looking for party

DoT - Damage over Time (like Poison)

DPS - Damage per Second. This is a more acurate way to determine weapon/spell strength.. well compared to max damage.

Aggro - you probably know this one...when u walk within a mob's agro range, it automatically goes for the kill with j00. As you level up, agro radius goes down, and eventually disappears.

Hate - VERY important in MMOS as you might now by now. If you're a fighter (tank) Your sole purpose is to maintain hate so others stay alive and function well. As a Mage, you want to cause top damage while keeping being #2 in the hate list. Taking hate from the tank in the party is n00bish and annoying, but yes it can be fun ;). Clerics build much hate by healing but should be #3 on the hate list, so if tank loses and mage dies. Cleric is safe to raise Mage while Tank recovers hate. Anyway.. for Hate, more than to know what it means, it's important to understand it ^^

Tanks (ppl who are built to take hits, primarily the fighters in fiesta

DDs - Damage Dealers (Mages and Archers, in most games you'll have more meleeing choices)

Clean Pull - Using a long range attack to draw out the desired mob out of a group of enemies. You might've seen this, as it's usually necessary at the end of the Mara KQ

You might hear people in more organized, more difficult events talking about difffernt kinds of pulls like a sac pull, or other things like that, if you ever come across things you don't understand by all means repost or ask me ingame ^^.

I think most of us appreciate real people like you and we will always be willing to help :D

Good luck and see you at OB!

To the boy, his mother, and his grandmother....I still can't get over how awesome it is. :D

Meteo 08-23-2007 02:23 PM

:p I know i think is too. I really hope my first child has the knack for games. Getting to share that experience is ...well pro

Wow. Hard to believe, but wow! See ya in-game.

Alastor1996 08-24-2007 03:36 AM

OMG would you be so kind and tell me what kind of topic is this, so confused.

Lady-Loki 08-24-2007 03:53 AM

Thanks Guys!

Awww! You all said so many nice things! It makes me feel good to see ppl respond without some of the usual noob comments. :)

We seem to have been born with a strong competitive gaming gene in our DNA. We have been guilty of playing games till body parts ached. When we were at the end of Four Swords we had been playing non-stop for so long we had to tag-team the controls. :o

We have always played lots of games, but as S_M said earlier, this is only our second foray into MMORPGs, the first being Toontown. And if any of you tried Toontown you realize much of the lingo we have encountered in Fiesta wasn't applicable in Toontown, so we have to ask questions. And we really do appreciate everyone being so nice!

In Fiesta I started with Lady_Loki, my Cleric. I took her through High-Cleric (and then to a 22) and then let her rest while I checked the other classes. I got my Mage (Lady_Raine) to WizMage and rested her and moved on to a Warrior (Lady_Danae) who made Clever Fighter. My poor archer was only 18 :( and fought like a desperate demon the night they shut us down, but alas, she went to bed at only 18.

And, as for tomorrow (I too took 1/2 day off to be ready for Open:cool:) I will be back on Lady_Loki working her back to High Cleric as quick as I can (cuz I love love love that revive).

Thanks again and we'll see everyone in Roumen tomorrow afternoon!!

You defined how Hate is used, but I don't think you really defined what Hate is. I have never heard the term Hate used before so I was curious about finding out. Although, after reading it, I was baffled. o.O

Anyone to help?

Lady-Loki 08-24-2007 04:10 AM

Aggro/Hate?

I kinda thought Hate sounded like what I had understood for Aggro - the Tank holds the mobs aggro and the support team doesn't need to pull the aggro off the tank or we might lose a cleric or mage in the process.

Maybe?

Kamilah 08-24-2007 04:19 AM

That makes sense.

I guess Hate would be better to understand if I had more experience with parties on Fiesta. Thanks for the help though Lady_Loki. BTW I love the name.

fullback 08-24-2007 04:32 AM

Snearing Kick raises hate/taunts the enemy.

Kamilah 08-24-2007 04:35 AM

So hate is like provoking the enemy to attack you?

fullback 08-24-2007 04:37 AM

Yes. When you have an archer/mage pull for you, you use Snearing kick to get them off you raising your "hate" level.

DragonReborn 08-24-2007 06:32 AM

Sorry I don't have much constructive to add to the thread that hasn't already been said, but I wanted to say hi and let lady loki know that she made my day! How you ask by making it so that I don't feel so alone as an older gamer hehehe. I actually applaud your courage in getting on this forum and being honest about who you are. I never tell people my age for fear of being shunned!! XD (a few folks in Panic Legion know what I am talking about). Anyway from a fellow old school gamer GOOD LUCK WITH THE GRIND :p

Edit: oh and sorry about my siggy...rotfl

Belaslav 08-24-2007 03:05 PM

Hate is more like threat level from you towards the monster. That's why archers have nature's protection - it reduces your threal level towards the monsters, thus making the monster attack someone else (very useful in KQs).

DTOSensei 08-24-2007 03:27 PM

Nature Protection is the las option to follow with life.
Thats why i love that skill =)
