System looks great to play nearly all games out today. I see you're getting an SSD as well. Install your Windows or whatever OS onto that drive and brace yourself for some lightning fast boot-ups. :)
Also don't defragment your SSD. Not recommended. Alsoooo maybe you can do without that proprietary anti-virus stuff. I've found AVG or Avast! work just fine and don't keep annoying you with pop-ups about your license as long as you get the free one. |

I use free Avast at home now as well. It's got such good reviews. |
Thanks Vasu!
The computer people will do all the installation... they should know to install window on the SDD.. but I'll make a note of it anyway... And thanks for the tip on the defragment.. wouldn't have known that! Okies I shall check out free Avast.. I think that's what I've got currently on my XP as well.. the only thing not on there is MS Office... |
Why isn't defragmentation recommended?
|
This might turn into a bit of a wall of text, but I'm bored at work anyway hehe, so:
In a traditional Hard Disk Drive (HDD) you have multiple layers of the storage on a spinning type platter with a small magnetic head that actually does the read/write stuff on the HDD. It's best used for reading sequentially, because the head starts reading and the platter spins and the head keeps reading along that sequential track. Now if the data is heavily fragmented i.e. the data is not stored in this ideal sequence, the platter has to do some extra spinning and takes a little more time for the entire read/write to be done, which is why defragmentation is a great idea to do every once in a while. On a Solid State Drive (SSD) however, you just have a bunch of flash storage chips sitting around and they can all be accessed and read/write at the same time. As a result the SSD actually intentionally writes data all over the place, trying to utilize as many of the chips as possible to be even faster. So an SSD is essentially meant to be (atleast slightly) fragmented. So why don't we all switch to SSDs? As great as they are, they're not only more expensive than HDDs but they also have a lesser lifespan. So any frequent use small documents of yours such as music, office files etc might be better stored on your regular HDD for now. Edit: Oh also defragmenting causes a whole bunch of unnecessary read/writes and doesn't really improve performance while decreasing life so that's why it's mainly not recommended. I realized I didn't even answer the question. :smarty: |
Ohh... sounds like the SSD needs a lot more care... good to know all this upfront..
|
I didn't know that... I have all my docs and stuff set up on the SSD... I think... hmm.......
|
^ I don't know if that's a bad thing really. It's not an officially recommended thing or anything. Just IMO word docs and music don't take much time to open anyway so I would be overly stingy about using my SSD for stuff like that haha.
|
ahahah.
While we have the computer expert here... do you have any brands or models you can recommend for dual monitor stands? Or anything I should look out for if I want to get one? |
No, I don't know much about that. :(
|
Hahahaha np I'll do some research XD
|
Anyone know if this new start menu has been released yet?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGf4ZScmxnY As cool as the metro screen look... I would like my start menu back.. |
Hmm I've got the Windows 8.1 Pro on a desktop..
I see some functions like showing app store in task bar and having a power button on Metro screen as a new feature of Windows 8.1 but I don't have those options... Are those functions only for tablet / laptops? I've checked for updates and I don't think I've got more Windows update to install.. |
And what torrent programs are you guys using? I don't recall my old utorrent to have so many ads!
|
You got your new comp?! How is it! Nice and fast? You can start gaming with us now. hahaha
I use utorrent. |
Yup nice and fast.. finally don't have to wait 15 mins for the computer to boot HAHAHA and it's so quiet...
But I think this new windows is a little buggy... I'm copy files between drives and several times in the middle of it it says the drive is offline or unavailable... =/ Still getting use to the whole Windows 8 thing... but slowly getting there... there's just some nifty windows 8.1 options that I don't seem to have and can't figure out why.. |
I'm really enjoying how Windows 8 ties in with the One Drive and the Microsoft account.. even though it feels a bit insecure that it's all linked together.. it's so convenient like a dropbox...
|
Like all your files are saved on One Drive?
|
Well not all, just the MS Office docs that I wanted up in the cloud...
But the good thing is I can access and edit the documents within the web browser and on the app so I don't have to download it and open it elsewhere... |
My laptop died and I'm looking to buy a desktop. Just noticed you had 16GB of RAM, what do you use all that RAM for?
|
I haven't figured that out yet... LOL I probably haven't used it to its full capacity yet... haven't had a chance to install any games to test it out...
Windows 8 lets you flick between the metro view and desktop view very quickly and easily so I suppose the ram helps a bit there? but it's probably still not using 16 gig worth unless I'm doing something heavy graphics / video editing or something right? I'm not sure LOL It was part of a pre-built package so I didn't change it... |
Next time I come over I'll install LoL for you.
|
I took some photos over the weekend.. and was about to touch them up before sending them to friends when I realise... I don't have photoshop on my new computer!
I felt empty all of a sudden... I don't realise how much I rely on photoshop... |
just put a filter over it duh
|
LOLOLOL!!!!!i
