OMG... JAPAN!!!!!!! I miss it so much~

a.L 02-10-2013 10:10 AM

I'm loving that show. It shows Japanese food quite a lot (though mostly ramen because David Chang draw a lot of his inspiration from Japan and his restaurant is a fancier ramen bar I think)

You have to watch Anthony Bourdain's No Reservation episodes about Japan

Wow they're long.. need to watch it another day..

But the ramen in Japan is just awesome! Not every place is good, but we've stumbled upon some that just makes you go "OMG!!"

Their broth is soooo tasty~

My mouth is watering watching that one by David Chang LOL

Those instant noodles aren't even American :( our instant ramen brand is Maruchan which is a branch of a Japanese company.

Hessah 02-10-2013 08:38 PM

LOLOL I was referring to how you guys call instant noodles Ramen.

Like if I say Ramen you guys think instant noodles right?

MikeyG 02-10-2013 10:40 PM

It is all about pho

Hessah 02-10-2013 11:10 PM

pho is good too, but I get to have it too often so it's not as special xD

In fact I had it like once a week for 3 months at one stage, I went on pho strike after that..

Lirange 02-11-2013 04:00 AM

WHOA! My mom has been cooking pho almost every Saturday for the last couple months and I'm starting to get sick of it too!

a.L 02-11-2013 04:29 AM

Scrubs. When my mother starts making a certain dish, she makes it at least 6 days a week. GG

Hessah 02-11-2013 04:48 AM

Some people can do that! I have a friend who lives alone so it's just easier for her to cook 1 big batch and eat that all week..

I'm lazy but I can't eat the same thing all week even if it means less work for me..

Blaaaaaaaah 02-11-2013 05:01 AM

I heard a few people raving about food in Vietnam and how fantastic the country is for a holiday. I want to go there now.

*adds to never ending list*

Hessah 02-11-2013 05:03 AM

It was so hot/humid there but the food was soo good. And pretty cheap too, but actually, not as cheap as you might expect. I thought a lot of the stuff was the same price as stuff you get in the US.

But I stayed with a friend and they had this pho... stall(?) outside their home and that was amazing. We only went once. T_T

If I had to choose, I would actually choose Thailand over Vietnam though. There weren't as many tourist-y things to do in Vietnam as there were in Thailand.

a.L 02-11-2013 07:15 AM

I've watched a show where a Vietnamese-Australian chef travels around Vietnam showcasing all the foods. He'd usually convert the prices to AUD and it's all very cheap @_@

Also my friends who have gone say bowls of pho go for <$1

But you have to be very careful because it's likely that you will get sick

Hessah 02-11-2013 10:39 AM

Vietnamese-Australian Chef, Luke Nguyen?

a.L 02-11-2013 11:12 AM

Yes lol

Hessah 02-11-2013 11:18 AM

We went to his restaurant once and met him! Kev was so star struck~ He's a really nice guy~ bringing out our dishes personally and telling us what they are!

The only person I've seen IRL was Poh from Masterchef season 1 T_T

Ralath 02-17-2013 11:16 PM

Ralath 02-17-2013 11:17 PM

This is basically a ramen video.

Hessah 02-17-2013 11:20 PM

The best thing about their Ramen is their egg!!

This. I laughed at once a week ... you guys must really eat a huge diversity of meals. I can see getting sick of pho, but what is special about ramen? Don't think we have it in Canada. Seems like it's just another package of processed garbage though

Hessah 02-18-2013 12:12 AM

In Sydney we do have a huge variety of cuisines, we don't talk about "do we eat chicken, beef or fish today?" we ask "do you want chinese, japanese, thai or mexican tonight?"

Real Ramen are not the package stuff. They're noodles made by the chef, and they also prepare their own soup/broth with pork bones or chicken for hours...

I believe there are some shops (in Japan) where their broths are something that's been cooking for years.. everyday they use the soup for customers then add water and more pork bones and keep boiling to keep the flavours up...

As a result, every ramen is different from different shops.

MikeyG 02-18-2013 07:19 PM

Oh my bad. I looked it up that looks delicious!

So it differs from pho by the broth?

Hessah 02-18-2013 08:36 PM

Yeah the broth is different, pho broth are thinner in texture, more like very flavoursome water.. while the soup in Ramen are generally much thicker..

The noodles are different too, pho use rice noodles, where ramen use egg noodles..
