The Thanksgiving Thread

All non-Americans are welcomed to join in on this thread too! ^o^

So are all of our American members going to be eating a feast tomorrow? I am! =D Whatcha gunna eat?

Hessah 11-21-2007 10:03 PM

Firstly, wat exactly is Thanksgiving? XD

Yosei 11-21-2007 10:06 PM

Since you're a noobie to Thanksgiving, I will tell you the story we're told as little kids.

Well supposedly, when the pilgrims came to America, they were having a rough winter, and they were all getting sick and dying and since the winter was rough, they couldn't get any food. Well, after that, a bunch of nice little native americans came up and decided to teach them how to hunt and farm. To celebrate their new friends and harvesting, they had a big meal. And thus made the holiday Thanksgiving.

But of course.. thats kind of unrealistic with the native Americans and the pilgrims uniting.

But its just a large feast to celebrate the end of the farming/harvesting season.

Hessah 11-21-2007 10:08 PM

XD yeah i thought the native americans are being discriminated against?

Ohhh cool? so wat is the exact date? 21st Nov? Does it become a public holiday?

Yosei 11-21-2007 10:11 PM

Its the 4th Thursday in November. Its a national holiday, almost everyone celebrates it. It isn't religious and its an excuse to eat lots and lots of food.

In my family, we're eating a turkey, duh, essential, stuffing, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, green bean caserole, corn, deviled eggs, spinach dip and crackers, cherry pie, pumpkin pie, and chocolate pudding pie.

Hessah 11-21-2007 10:16 PM

so do ppl go to work on the Friday?

oh mad a feast!

Yosei 11-21-2007 10:23 PM

We have more, but thats all I can think of.

I think people do o.o Not sure.

Hessah 11-21-2007 10:24 PM

Australia gotta find something to celebrate more often..

we get Australia Day.. but nothing special happens.. just a long weekend...

Yosei 11-21-2007 10:26 PM

I mean.. if the rest of the world really wanted, they could celebrate it too. Cuz its not like we're celebrating our Independance day, just the harvesting season. Ya'lls would be on a different time of the year obviously.

Hessah 11-21-2007 10:32 PM

i welcome any excuse for a holiday, i'll celebrate halloween, thanksgiving, independance day, chinese new year, japanese new year, moon festival, chin ming (?? azn day dedicated for relos that has passed away), budda's bday, easter, xmas, valentines day, white day, black day...

name me a celebrate and i'll gladly hv it as a public holiday XD

Esen 11-21-2007 10:34 PM

My family on both sides are having dinner, but my mom's side called us first. xD They asked if we wanted to have it tomorrow or Sunday, and my dad said Thursday. The my dad's side of the family called, but they were having their dinner tomorrow too... I think we're going to my mom's side.. I'm not sure, I wasn't informed until this morning, eating leftover turkey from a party my brother's friends had. ^^ Usually, though, we attend both. What we're eating exactly, I don't know. I'm sure their will be some stuffing, cranberry sauce, a turkey, and pie or cheesecake or both involved... I prefer cheesecake over pie though. *nods* There might be potatos (in some form) or yams, but I don't know for sure. There could be other stuff. *shrugs* o-o

+Tequila+ 11-21-2007 10:45 PM

Pritcher 11-21-2007 10:51 PM

We're not actually doing the big family get together this year, which I'm kind of thankful for. Not that I dislike my family or anything, they're OK, (some of them anyway), but there's just too damn many people. This year where I'm going it'll just be my mom, one of my sisters and her girlfriend and me. The rest of the clan will just be doing their own things with their families.

Normal stuff to eat I guess, turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, yams, grean beans, deviled eggs, etc.. We usually have various platters of of raw veggies and pickled things too, black and green olives, pickles, coctail onions and whatnot. I think all we're doiing for dessert this year is pumpkin pie. Which is fine by me since that's just about the only dessert I actually like.

Valentines 11-21-2007 10:53 PM

I have nothing in common with me family.

Yosei 11-21-2007 10:56 PM

Doesn't mean you can't have a thanksgiving dinner. I'm don't have that much in common with my parents either.

So ignoring the canine eating person there.

I'm in Canada so I've already had my Thanksgiving dinner in October. :D (I think it was October... early November, I don't remember...) But anyway, I had to go to my boyfriend's dad's place and then the day after ate another turkey at home. So much food... but yummy cranberry sauce.

@Yosei: Holy crap that's a lot of pie.

No, but it does mean I have to go somewhere to eat something I don't want then I have to sit there for 2 hours doing nothing.

Esen 11-22-2007 01:37 AM

Ooo, crab. <3 Haha, I don't think I'll eat much unless the food is just really good... When I eat too much, I end up with discomfort for most of the night. >_>

We went out to eat at a seafood buffet one Thanksgiving and had a blast. I wonder why we never did that again? I'd rather do all you can crab legs and shrimp than some turkey any day. I'm gonna suggest that again next year.
