Apple sues HTC for iPhone patent infringement

Apple announced Tuesday that it had filed a lawsuit against HTC, maker of the Nexus One smartphone from Google, accusing the Taiwan company of infringing on 20 iPhone patents.

"We can sit by and watch competitors steal our patented inventions, or we can do something about it," Apple chief executive Steve Jobs said in a statement.

"We've decided to do something about it. We think competition is healthy, but competitors should create their own original technology, not steal ours," Jobs said.

Apple accused HTC of infringing on 20 Apple patents related to the "user interface, underlying architecture and hardware" of the iPhone.

The company, based in Cupertino, California, said the lawsuit was filed in a US District Court in the state of Delaware and with the US International Trade Commission.

Apple has sold more than 40 million iPhones since introducing the smartphone in 2007.

HTC makes handsets for a number of leading companies and is the manufacturer of the Nexus One unveiled by Apple rival Google in January.

Apple is currently being sued by Nokia for patent infringement and has countersued the Finnish mobile phone giant.
Apple you fail.

Completely Agree. Just because it uses the same parts dose'nt mean that it has the same content.

"it..might actually beat us, I mean, they care about their customers....they must be eliminated....Send in.... The Flying Monkeys...."

Get on with time Apple!

Firefox didn't sue you for adding tabs in safari so what makes you think you can sue others for an "interface"...

You can never "own" a technology.. people WILL take ideas and develop more... they should know that...

Hraesvelg 03-04-2010 09:37 PM

I'd have to see the patents first to form an actual opinion, but at the moment I really don't care enough to look up the suit and then the patents, heh. Hopefully Wired or someone will break it down.

Jikanu 03-04-2010 10:00 PM

Assuming the patents are on their side, then they have every legal right to sue. Don't think it's right, but hey... what do you expect from corporations?

Hraesvelg 03-04-2010 10:25 PM

They have the right to file a suit whether or not the suit has merit, but that would probably mean sanctions for their lawyer...but that's neither here nor there.

The problem with patents is that they can be overly vague and broad. BT claimed to have patented hyperlinks, for fuck's sake.

It's not Wired but Slate's pretty cool:

Hah. Tell that to Amazon. They patented "one-click" technology. -.-

I remember hearing that someone was testing the patent system.. and copyrighted swinging sideways on the swings LOL

More Apple legal case..

It annoys me to see that Apple (who chose an ordinary fruit as company name) wants to claim a letter (one letter "i" out of the 26 alphabet) and stop everyone from using it!

Hraesvelg 03-11-2010 11:30 PM

Not to mention the whole legal brouhaha they had with the record label named Apple. Apple had a little band you might have heard of...the Ants? Beetles? Some sort of insect.

Hessah 03-11-2010 11:35 PM

Is it? I hvn't heard of that one..

So are they suing people who had their name for longer than they've had theirs?

aramil001 03-12-2010 12:53 PM

It could be a publicity stunt. Apple probably won't win it, but it's good for getting attention...
