How much should I have tipped?

I ordered a sandwhich from jimmy johns and it cost $3.25 I tipped him $2.75. That seems like a lot for a $3.25 sandwhich. I just spent $6.00. That's how much I tip a pizza man usually. Next time I order what do you guys think is the appropriate tip? They have free delivery btw so that saves me a buck or two.

I gave him a 20, he gave me the bills I gave him 2 dollars and told him to keep the change.

I just go by the 15% rule xD

Always tip 15%. Its just easy to go by that D:

Ivramire 01-23-2010 06:45 PM

Take total of the bill.

Divide it by height of waiter (in feet)

45cents?G__G
Doesn't seem like much of a tip

MikeyG 01-23-2010 07:32 PM

Then you be nice and tip him a solid doller, he doesn't deserve no more then that anyways.

I wouldn't even tip at Jimmy Johns... Jimmy Johns is like Subway and you don't tip at Subway.

And $2.75 tip for a $3.25 sandwich is... a lot.

MikeyG 01-23-2010 11:28 PM

LMAO IT's LIKE SUBWAY? FUUCK YOU SHOULDN'T TIP AT ALL LMAO.

A_Forever 01-23-2010 11:29 PM

I love Jimmy John's 8D

Manzcar 01-23-2010 11:38 PM

I think he was talking about it being delivered to their house not going to the store itself.

Hraesvelg 01-23-2010 11:53 PM

They delivered a $3.25 sandwich for free? It's hard to imagine that. Most places I know have a minimum order required. The thing is, if you plan on ordering more from this place, you've done yourself a great favor. You might not need to tip quite so much of a percentage, but if you're known as someone who tips generously, drivers will fight for your stop and sometimes bring freebies. I used to work at a place where I couldn't leave the site for 48 hours. Sometimes, instead of bringing my food, I'd order out. The places around got to recognizing my address and they started bringing me 2-Litre drinks, coupons for free food (the, ooops! We made a mistake! cards), even a couple of times the Dominos guy would run by the place after closing with free pizzas that would have been trashed.

That said, I was tipping about $5 on a $25-30 order. In general, I tip 15% for good service at places I don't plan on going to a lot and 20% (or more) on places I frequent.

Rightclaw 01-24-2010 01:02 AM

I always tip $5 regardless of how much my food costs.

Lirange 01-24-2010 03:41 AM

Kay, I think I'll tip a dollar or two next time. Including the change. And yeah, it's a delivery so you have to tip them unless you want to seem like a jerk, and especially since delivery is free it'd be just rude not to. I ordered again and so did my sister and I felt bad because I just told him to keep the change and it was only 75cents. G__G

I've noticed that there's not much of a tipping culture here in the middle-east. People appreciate it now and then, but there's an implicit feeling in some places that you don't have to tip at all. Very diferent from US.

From what I gather, it's something of an insult in Europe.

Saaaaaame here in Australia... well... at least in Sydney. We do tip at some restaurants and things, but it's pretty optional. Tipping is more common in the Asian restaurants though... I think. But I'm not sure what's the tipping rules with deliveries. I don't think I ever paid for food delivery to know... haha.

But I had a really embarrassing experience once. Back in high school, I went out with a small group of friends. This girl was craving something at some ice cream/dessert place, so we went to eat. We all ordered ice creams at the counter (so we paid already) while she was the only one that ordered a dish that costed something like $XX.95. When she paid the bill, she paid the rounded up amount (say, if it was $14.95, she paid $15). The waitress collected it, and we continued to sit there chatting.

We sat there for quite a while that it made me feel a little weird. Even though the place was empty, I didn't feel right about still sitting there since it's not the type of place for you to sit and chat like cafes. I also noticed the waitress looking at us every now and then, and then finally she came back with that 5c change.

And omg, my friend took it and we stood up to leave!

God I was so embarrassed! Not sure if she's still like that though. Maybe (hopefully) it was just the young factor.

^What a cheap friend!!

It's not common to tip in China. :/

Not as far as I know, We dont tip usually, but if the waitress/waiter in a restaurant is nice and helpful then we tip, if not, then we keep our goddamned cash !

Ivramire 01-24-2010 10:03 AM

I've read that in most cases in the UK, the tip is automatically added to the tab. If you didn't like the service though, you can ask for that amount back o_o

A_Forever 01-24-2010 02:32 PM

To not tip delivery people (At least in the U.S.) kills them. If they don't get tipped, they really don't make much money. Same with waitresses. My mom was once a waitress and a few other people I know.. their pay was such crap that without tips, they wouldn't have been able to pay for much xD

Lirange 01-24-2010 04:45 PM

Yeah, my sister was a waitress at IHOP and she only made $2/hour so she made money of tipped.
