it depens on your relationship with your family and what you know about them. he could've had a good relationship with his mother and may hae thought she would be accepting/supportive whatever. maybe he just wanted to tell someone and she was the only one he thought wasn't too homophobic to tell. idk. i know that if for some reason i decided to tell someone in my family it would come down to either my mother, aunt, or cousin.

They probably told their mom first, but then their mom didn't take it well, so they didn't tell anyone else.
