Illiteracy here we come!

What is with schools these days? Or is it just the schools in my area...

Anywho, my mom was talking to me about the end of the year parent/teacher conferences.

My nephew is going into middle school next year, and his hand writing is HORRENDOUS. It's about the same as a first grader. My mom asked his teacher if they work on stuff like that to improve their handwriting. The lady said they don't worry about that too much because in the future, things will probably be done on computer. And my mom was like "What about job applications?" She had no answer for that. They don't even teach them cursive o.o they show them how to read it, but they do not push them to write cursive.

What about formal signatures???

Pretty sad.

And my 3rd grade nephew. He did an essay and the words were spelled horribly, but he got an A for it. She asked his teacher if his spelling errors are going to be a problem in the future. She said as long as they sounded them out and the word was relatively close, it wasn't an issue. And I'm talking about basic words. I know these are just little kids but still..

...

XD I'm just lazy to read but. :o

I type some words horribly horrible....but i release them good. :D

Dynamics 06-04-2009 08:05 PM

Well that's no good at all. Schools shouldn't drop their standards just because computers can supposedly make up for what's lost :/. I feel like they've removed 3 or 4 bricks from the bottom of the academic wall.

I don't trust Microsoft Word to be 100% accurate, either.

Kaiki 06-04-2009 08:18 PM

Wow... That is rather sad. I agree that we will be using computers/technology more and more but still... kids should continue learning cursive and improving on their handwriting... And learning how to spell. :uhoh:

Looks like we have an interesting future ahead of us... o.o

Sparkeh 06-04-2009 08:25 PM

Atleast MS word have grammar check or we all be doomed. :o

Umm...btw blaahs when is the vooting? :3

Yosei 06-04-2009 08:47 PM

Random and blahs isn't even in this thread o.o yet.

But yeah. Thats pretty sad. I remember having to know cursive, and our spelling was counted. That was the most frustrating thing about the English part of the school day in elementary school. But, most of the stuff about English, spelling, and grammar, I learned then. So it concerns me how much they push the kids these days.

English learning here sucks.

Internet ftw.

Destrus 06-04-2009 08:53 PM

i learned cursive in pre-school/kindergarten o_O

i got 100's on all my spelling tests too :3

too bad my spelling and grammar have gotten progressively worse over the years, i blame the internet

There ^^

As i told...English learning here sucks. :o

Esen 06-04-2009 09:00 PM

Spelling and handwriting were major parts for most of my elementary years too. I used to suck at spelling, but I improved each year. And yeah, handwriting gets better with practice too.

Teachers should crack down on it early. :/

Hraesvelg 06-04-2009 09:06 PM

My handwriting is terrible, but spelling is essential.

Destrus 06-04-2009 09:25 PM

my handwriting is terrible as well, especially if i rush. teachers have a hard time understanding ti sometimes.

oh i should vlarify the me learning cursive thing:
cursive is what they taught us to write, there was no learning print for me. i especially have to lol cause i remember at one point there was certain letters i didn't know how to write in print but knew perfectly well in cursive.

Yosei 06-04-2009 09:34 PM

I sucked hard when I was first learning how to pronounce words and spell them. But then I got really good, I was a spelling bee dork, and I'm pretty good at spitting out the letters of a word on command.

I just think how you write says a lot about you. I know a lot of people used to say the bigger your hand writing is the more immature you were for your age.

Destrus 06-04-2009 09:38 PM

i always thought my hand writing was big but people said it was small >_<

Loveless 06-04-2009 11:15 PM

That is horrible. I remember my teacher not letting the class out for recess until we finished our handwriting exercises.

I don't think you need to write/print like a typewriter (I do) but having legible writing should be encouraged. Relying on computers is just asking for trouble in the future. And spelling is just... yeah, spell check works but you also have to have the right settings (like color and colour, etc). And they won't catch differences like their, there, and they're. All spelled correctly, sound the same, different meanings.

It is a pet peeve now when I see people type and/or say "more funner" and the like. Yuck.

Yosei 06-04-2009 11:21 PM

Or when people can't tell when to use a or an.

Loveless 06-04-2009 11:24 PM

Yeah... to me I would think that would come rather naturally.

If it's a second language then sure... I guess it'd be difficult at first but again, not that hard to pick up.

Hessah 06-05-2009 12:19 AM

Well for Sparky I could understand if they're not very fuss with grammar and stuff, coz it's a 2nd language...

but if English is the only language that you speak and you cant even get that to an acceptable standard.. that's horrible...

Just recently I heard on the radio that this 18 years old girl wrote a complain letter about a TV channel to a newspaper... Man I don't even know if you call her letter English or Chinese... it's... Chinese all spelled out in English...

"I think they are very inch lor, say bad for short say bad for fat, very much hurt us ga ma..."

"Inch" has the same sound as "mean" in Chinese... so they took the sound then "translate" it into English...

It was like WUT?

But hand writing... well doctors have bad handwritings and they're very knowledgeable people and well respected in society... so....? LOL

Loveless 06-05-2009 12:37 AM

Wow... that's how some people I know speak or write on their facebook. And these are people I've known from grade school.

Anyway, that's the thing... you write a complaint letter like that you're not going to be taken seriously.

It's not the doctors... it's the pharmacists that I admire for being able to read it! xD

Hessah 06-05-2009 12:48 AM

Yeah that's how people write on the net, and this new generation thinks that it's appropriate to write like that for formal stuff too!!

I dunno if that girl did her letter like that so she gets attention (it's was mentioned through radio and things, so in a way she did get her message out further than she's sent it..)

but... it was like WOW... and I'm not sure if I shold be proud that I could actually understand that letter better than my parents would LOL

LOL True about the pharmacists there must be a subject in Uni on "how to read Doctor's writing"

Loveless 06-05-2009 12:51 AM

Couple years back I was reading this one particular person's blog. In the end it said "Baby's first words: Lol." I laughed then but I'm starting to think it's possible... scary.

Hessah 06-05-2009 12:58 AM

HAHAHA!!

And its funny when u see little kiddies that ask "what's that?" pointing to a casette tape...

Back then we use tapes... now people can use these "Smart LED Lights" to transmit data... http://www.ecogeek.org/content/view/2194/

Vasu 06-05-2009 01:01 AM

I think it doesn't matter even if English is your second language, you should still be relatively fluent in it. Although English almost isn't my second language. I think in English, so the grammar and stuff comes pretty naturally to me.

Hessah 06-05-2009 01:14 AM

To ask someone that doesnt need to speak English everyday to be fluent in it is a lot to ask for....

Imagine you learn French at school, and that's the only time you need to speak French.. will you be relatively fluent in it?

a.L 06-05-2009 01:15 AM

I feel smart in English class. LOL

Loveless 06-05-2009 01:18 AM

Ah, French class. I forgot everything I learned that day as soon as I stepped out of the classroom.

a.L 06-05-2009 01:21 AM

Sounds like me in Chinese. xD

Though I have to say, I didn't learn much in the first place.

Loveless 06-05-2009 01:23 AM

And Japanese class killed my brain cells due to stupid teacher.

Hraesvelg 06-05-2009 01:23 AM

Lolquoi?

My Japanese class isn't so bad. I just feel we aren't learning enough. :/

Yosei 06-05-2009 01:47 AM

My nephews first sentence was "You've got mail" ._. But then again, he is the most materialistic 8 year old I've ever seen lol.

I wanna slap anyone who writes in net speak on paper. Makes me think of the movie Idiocracy. I think they should re-do that movie lol. Edit in some netspeak.

And I think Doctors write sloppy on purpose. I heard it makes it harder for people to immitate their hand writing and you can't tell WHAT they are writing so you can't copy the prescription.

I get what you're saying, but they should atleast know the difference between "a" and "an" just like even though I'm not fluent in French, I know the difference between un and une or le and la.

Hessah 06-05-2009 01:53 AM

Actually... I'd think that non-english speaking people are more aware of the A and AN than those that are fluent english speakers!

a.L 06-05-2009 01:54 AM

Switching "your" and "you're" irritates me the most.

Also, "there", "their" and "they're".

This made me laugh.. at myself. ._.

a.L 06-05-2009 01:58 AM

I make a lot of grammatical mistakes too. ><

Hyper 06-05-2009 01:58 AM

What the fuck...

Jesus, even the public schools here (California, apparently one of the worst states in education) aren't that bad.

I took a quiz on facebook to see if I use them fast. You had to do it as quick as you could.

Hessah 06-05-2009 02:00 AM

Sometimes in my head i know which their, there, they're i should be using but my finger just come out with the wrong one without me noticing it..

Like in my head I'd say "used" but my finger typed "just" all the time...

a.L 06-05-2009 02:00 AM

I think the internet/texting is partly to blame. When you use "ur" a lot, it's probably easier to mix them up.
