Hmmmmmm this makes me question myself..

母牛 / 雌牛 indicates that the cow is female..

Does "Cow" have to be female?! It's a loose term for both genders right?

This thread makes me giggle. rofl

Cows are females, bulls are males.

Glad to know I'm not the only one that thought that xD

Although Hrae wouldn't be wrong for something like like this...

Hraesvelg 04-30-2009 05:04 AM

There are quite a few terms for cattle, but cows are always female. There's a whole section on cattle terminology on wiki, if you'd like to know more.

Hessah 04-30-2009 05:08 AM

LOL!!

I guess as a kid.. from Asian we learnt that Cow = 牛 which doesn't specify wat gender the animal is...

Ralath 04-30-2009 05:29 AM

And yet, we have 他,她,and 它 just to make sure we know what gender we are talking about.

=o=

Hraesvelg 04-30-2009 05:32 AM

Well, cattle is kind of an odd case in English. There aren't any gender-neutral words that can be used in the singular for cattle. A cow and a bull together can be "two cattle", but each one would be referred to either as cow, heifer, bull, steer, calf, etc.

Now, that's not to say if you see a field full of cattle someone won't say "Hey, look at the group of cows." That's not proper or correct, but it is common. So it bring in even more confusion.

I tottally thought that black cows were bulls, whether it be girls or boys. But I thought cows that werent black, were just cows. I was oh so wrong, appearently.

Hraesvelg 04-30-2009 05:59 AM

Sounds like one of my ex-girlfriends. We were driving out in Texas and there was a very large herd grazing, mostly brown and a few black cattle. I pointed out the huge herd, and she said, "Those aren't cows! Cows are only black and white!"

I had to explain the difference between dairy cows and beef cattle and the various breeds, and that she was talking about Holsteins, a type of dairy cow.
