Pretty Princess

This is just something I pondered, but basically the topic is..

Disney princesses: good for little girls, or bad?

I only wonder about this because I spend my entire day babysitting my 4 year old niece, who LOVES Disney princesses. Some people say its good for the girls to look up to these animated heroins. They inspire to fight for what your dreams and what you believe in. But honestly.. is a little girl going to look so deeply into the moral of the story and be like, "Wow.. she didn't want to end up like that, so she went against everything against all odds so she could be with her prince! I'm going to do that too!"
From observation.. this is what my niece sees.
PRINCESS!! She gets people to serve her, people love her, she gets lots of things, shes royalty, she doesn't have to listen to what the lower lives tell her. And yeah.. she's going through a "I'm a princess" phase, which I know isn't bad. All kids go through a royalty phase at one point in their life.

But really.. is this stuff more inspiring, or is it just making them think they're princesses and better than everyone else? Some people look too into it.. and say its horrible and people shouldn't sell Disney princess stuff. But then some think its just Disney's way of making money.
Then again.. it could ultimately lead to the desire of having a glamorous lifestyle.

What do you guys think?

.o0O0O0o. 10-10-2007 06:55 PM

Princesses turn out to become gold diggas! Like, those folks that only mine in GH and never heal or DPS, ZOMG! I hate those people! Truely... I'm watching that show Beauty and Geeks. And there's this "girl" that's like totally the end product of a "princess." She looks blackanese, as chris tucker put it, and she's a babysitter. I forgot her name but she's so "valet" like and airheaded. I have a daughter and love her to death...I'd do anything for her happiness, but i won't cater everything to her like a "princess." She'll need to scrub the toilet and do other housework and carry the same heavy stone i make my boys carry. Equal opportunity!

Yosei 10-10-2007 10:49 PM

Did you also notice they never make awesome job barbies? Lol, yeah.. again, I only notice these things because I basically raise my niece(my sister is in prison and the dad fled). But yeah.. I was at an antique auction, they had things like the doctor barbie, air force, sports, etc. Now they're like "Sparkly fairy Barbie!!!"

Barbie no longer has every job in the world D: She obviously got high off of something and goes around riding a pegasus.

rokaraged 10-10-2007 11:55 PM

Its a hard say really....
But for most children imagination plays a very large part in thier lives. Problem is with Barbie and disney is that thier MILKING A GOLDEN COW with imaginations and not just with princesses. Its very easy to manipulate a child with their imagination and in the end all the businesses are just here for profit.

Sad thing these companies have changed the main stream thought of the lives of princesses and cowboys for example.

Princesses: the Disney/barbie mainstream thought:
Beautiful naturally , destinied to find the prince of her dreams for no apparent reason whatsoever

Princesses in reality in the medieval times:
They were pampered like the mainstream thought allowed but 9 times out of 10 their marriages were forced for political reason. If you were a princess, have fun being in a FORCED MARRIAGE with some random guy you've never met before 20 YEARS OLDER THAN YOU just so the guy's father doesn't invade your homecountry and kill everyone.....

Cowboys: Mainstream thought
Bad@$$ western americans who follow thier own rules and constantly get into gun fights and battles with the native americans. Always gets the girl

Cowboys: reality
You just basically moved cattle from point A to point B to sell the meat most of your life. Technically your almost like a sheperd. The Profession really did not last very long once railroads were established. If you wanted to court a lady your profession was just plain PUTRID hygenically even by standards in that time.

And as for the lack of Great jobs for barbies, their REALLY inspiring girls to be lazy arrogant women when they grow up.... Today, people who act like princesses are loathed (I.e Paris Hilton) But disney and barbie aren't really help stop that...

O-mie 10-11-2007 12:11 AM

Well lets see, the two disney princesses I liked were Ariel (Who int he book of hte little mermaid, eric rejected her, and she comitted suicide because of it >_> WTG disney) And Belle from beauty and the beast, who wasn't actually a princess.

Cinderella was okay too I guess, she was in a pretty bad spot. :x But some of the other ones just make me sick. I don't like the whole "BE THE BEST YOU CAN BE.... BUT ONLY TO GET A GUY" ~_~ Guys suck either way D:

does this include me *puppy dog eyes*

O-mie 10-11-2007 12:34 AM

Rofl XD Well devoting your life just to get one's attention is stupid and will only get people hurt >_> Since if you have to devote your whole self JUST to get attention, something isn't right either way =p

Then again...

If Barbie were a real woman, she would have the following:

Height: ~7' (7 feet approx.)
Bust: 38-40 inches.
Waist: 18-24 inches.
Hips: 33-35 inches.
Weight: 110 pounds.

and...

Mode of Transportation: On all fours.

Though different websites and articles have different numbers. Some say that it would be around 6 feet, but around 86 pounds.

O-mie 10-11-2007 03:15 AM

Barbie terrifies me D:

Hessah 10-11-2007 03:16 AM

erm... barbie's figure was based on a blow up doll... u know.. this kinki ones... XD but barbie isnt the "cool" thing anymore... well in Aust anyway.. the popular thing among young girls now are "Bratz", those big head, big eye ugly characters...

back to princess... totally agree with yosei, no kid will understand those "morals", i certainly didnt pick up any myself... its just adults trying to complicate a simple kid's mind..

but i wouldnt say that they're bad either.. i'm sure for some kids u can put those movies up for hrs and they'll just sit there and watch it over and over again.. (although some kids like to watch one particular part over and over again which gets annoying.. -think of my lil couz-)

all kids need imaginations.. as imagination is one of the privilege that only kids can have.. (us older kids can hv imaginations too, but our imagination is often shattered rather quickly coz we learnt something called reality)

O-mie 10-11-2007 03:29 AM

My niece is into Bratz. I hate them. Whore dolls D:

I also hate how disney rips off so much crap. >_> I could go on for DAYS about Disney. Like for example, Walt Disney didn't animate or draw SHIT, Ub iwerks came up with it all, Disney was the financial guy D: FINANCIAL! They were partners and Disney basically took all the credit, which caused ub to leave, and he never animated again. v_v

Hessah 10-11-2007 03:56 AM

yeah.. all the toy stories, finding nemo, the incredibles, monsters inc... they're all animated by Pixar!

Disney is the brand and the $$$

but i think they do the quality control thing too, so watever they fund are "good quality"

O-mie 10-11-2007 04:45 AM

Well disney CLOSED their 2D animation studios a while back. Not sure if they re-opened or not, but they're idiots. x_x I'm not fond of pixar either. They are only as popular as they are now because they were the first 3D company that got big HERE.... I mean... They're not that fabulous ;x when you compare them to other 3D Studios. x.x; Yar...

Hessah 10-11-2007 04:53 AM

i thought pixar are fabulous.. just check the hair they did on sally (however u spell the blue monster's name) from monsters Inc was pretty well done...

but then.. i dunno wat "great" 3D studios produce... wat company did over the hedge? they're pretty good too.. but i cant tell the difference between them and pixar...

Happy feet was not bad.. considering that they hv so many water scenes... i believe they're done by an Aussie company... but i wouldnt say they great though (i think the pinguins are pretty ugly XD)

Blaaaaaaaah 10-11-2007 04:53 AM

I don't think it's bad. Like you said, it's only a phase. Kids grow out of the princess phase eventually, it isn't anything serious unless the parents spoil them silly. I mean, if I tried to act like a princess and get everyone to serve me back then, I'd get told off by my mum.

It's a children's movie. Like you said, the kids won't be able to read the morals of the story because they're too young. Similarly, I don't think they're going to be dwell into "I'm the centre of the world" much either. It's just a little innocent fantasy that kids go through, which I think is good thing. I don't like kids who seem to recognise all the morals and everything and being "mature" about stuff when they're still very young. Everyone needs a naive childhood phase.

Besides, I don't think the Princess classics were all that bad. Cinderella was certainly not spoiled, Snow white was bullied by the evil Queen, Jasmine had a dad who was controlled by Jarfar, etc. Each Princess had their own problem and wasn't portrayed as a character who got everything their own way. I don't remember going through this "I'm the centre of the world because I'm a Princess" phase... I just remember going through the "I wish I was a princess so I can wear pretty dresses" phase. D:

Yosei 10-11-2007 05:05 AM

My favorite Disney characters were Tinkerbell and Pocahontas lol.
I HATE those bratz dolls. They're starting to milk the kids too. And one of their commercials annoyed the hell out of me, it was so grammatically incorrect I wanted to slap the person in charge.

Hessah 10-11-2007 05:48 AM

HHAHA oh kt! lemme tell u.. u not remembering that u went through the "i'm the centre of the world" phase, doesnt mean it didnt exist!!!

we use to play dolls or watever together.. and u make me say "this and that" to you.. and I have do this and that for you... HAHA

BUT i doubt that was anything to do with u watching disney princess... that's just the nature of uas the youngest kid of the family... (and apparently i get to avoid doing homework if i play with u and get u out of trouble by mum XD)

LOL I don't remember being that bossy.... well okay, maybe I did. xDD But hey you get to bludge from homework so we're even!

O-mie 10-11-2007 06:58 AM

I liked Belle a lot xD And Mulan haha

Edit*

Also I think dreamworks was responsible for over the hedge. They're pretty good. =o But I mean, compare pixar to like, square ors omething...yeah D:

Yosei 10-11-2007 04:35 PM

Yeah there's alot of super awesome animation companies that are over-looked.

ATTENION!?!?!?!?!?!?

must...FEED.................

okay enough spam XD

Xhaos Incarnate 10-22-2007 10:03 AM

In my opinion, it has changed from one to the other. A while back, when these movies first came out (or rather, when the Stories did), they were meant to inspire children, not only little girls, into showing that no matter what the situation is, things can change for the better. However, now that the celebrities are everywhere on the news getting special treatment and whatever they want. *cough* Paris *cough*. The idea of the "princess" is not bad in and of itself, but it is more on the parent to help shape the child's understanding on it. Which is where most of the problems stem from, the parents not guiding their children as they should. On a side note, I find it amusing that I am only 16 and already critisizing the current offspring. XD Well, thats my two cents.

Im sorry but that just made me lol so hard. I haven't read the real story. Disney really dressed it up, didn't they.

Kinda off topic but its about disney, but has anyone else noticed something "interesting" in the scene where Simba falls on the flowers and they float into the air in The Lion King?

Lady-Loki 10-22-2007 01:39 PM

First - re: Princesses, Disney or otherwise, and little girls: It's all about the glitter and glam. Fancy dress, crown with jewels, shiny wands . . . yep name that princess anything you want and put her in whatever setting you want but put a fluffy puffy satin gown and sparkly crown on her and the little girls want to be her. I helped raise my baby sister, I raised Spirit, I have had my granddaughter (who will soon turn 13) most weekends of her life and now I have the 2-1/2 year old granddaughter most weekends and they have all gone or is going through the Princess thing and yet none grew up thinking they we due special treatment as a princess (Spirit likes to think she is entitled to princess treatment, but in reality she knows better).

Yep, it’s all about the glitter and glam at the Disney Princess phase of their lives.

Ill tell you. In that scene where he falls on the flowers and they float into the air, if you pause the scene, the flowers clearly spell out the word "SEX" If you dont believe me, go check it out. Its very obvious

Yosei 10-22-2007 09:30 PM

Disney has a lot of subliminal messages, like the famous penis on in the Little Mermaid coverand also the porno pic in the Rescuers.

I must object!!!! I never went through the "princess" phase!!!! I was a tomboy. Ok, maybe for a day or two, but that was the extent of it!!!
And I do not think I am entitled to princess treatment now, I simply like to be thought of as my husband refers to me - Spoiled.

Oh believe me, they were there. I saw them with my own two very little eyes. Now I can blame Disney for turning me into this psychotic teen-age whatever the hell it is that I am. Thank you Disney ^^ XD

Yosei 10-23-2007 06:56 AM

They also had them change it so it doesn't look like Ariel is looking down at the dudes crotch.
