Ice Bolt / Ice Blast
 

I just reached level 51, and got ice blast.. finally hit the skill that's linked to one of my other most often used skill - ice bolt

So what's the different between these two skills?

Ice Bolt 8 seems to do very similar dmg to Ice Blast 1

They both have the same cool down... Blast last a slightly longer cast time but it looks more flashy~ XD

So... which skill should I be using? does it depend on situation?

I use iceblast
I think it slows more, not quite sure though

Since I generally 1 on 1 solo I would shoot that off first, then mm, then kite with lightning, mm, then judging on how much hp left I might throw in a firebolt then another mm
if not then I skip ahead to fireball, mm, magic blast, mm

Iceblast is pretty
fireball was a disappointment
its a ripoff of iceblast, not as pretty, and since I empowered firebolt its not as strong either

I just use ice blast. Don't ask me why, I just think the animation looks better.

Good info to know. I thought fireball was a ripoff. Now I know not to empower it.

yeah, i found out tht i die more due to the longer cast time. :zomg:why does it always happen to me only? i really dislike those cast time stuff, preferring instant.

That's true. Ice Blast only comes into on the first round of casting in a solo situation. I can usually spam Magic Missle (LVL1), Firebolt (LVL8), and Magic Blast (LVL1) to kill something before the cooldown is even over on this spell. It's pretty but you only get one time chance to use it if your a decent mage. If you have time to use it again on yellow/orange-tagged enemies, you might need to redistribute some attribute/skill points, unless you wlecome death.

It's nice to have in groups as well because it is almost always guaranteed to slow down the enemy it targets, unlike Icebolt (I think it works 75% of the time). When you get Frost Nova at lvl 60, you can move this spell to the archive list.

Fire ball will eventually exceed fire bolt in damage; great skill especially if you land a critical hit. :/

I know that now. I readjusted my skill points for the long run, so now I'm good. Thanks for the info.

Yes it does. If you have the Cash Spark loot, you can reset the points (like I do every 10 levels) to make adjustments to your spell damage when you outgrow old spells for the best mage performance. Just a suggestion for the working class and those with platinum cash spark status lol!

for some reason i can get ice bolt to stick better than ice blast, case in point: in the old KKP KQ, slowing Robo down during the running of him to the end, Ice Bolt stuck probably 75% of the time, Ice Blast about 25%. just an observation.

woulda been nice if this skill, instead of lightning was castable while running.

Maybe I'm just getting lucky with my Ice Blasts then. It's so pretty and it sticks everytime just about. :zomg:

hm... im not a mage, but may i make a suggestion?

why not, durring pve, cast ice blast, and then use ice bolt the rest of the time? that way, since iceblast seems to be considered superior in terms of slowdown and success (by most here at least) you could gain aggro with it, and then use icebolt later in the battle if needed.

That could work, if you have both spells in your hotkey list. They both share the same cooldown, so it doesn't matter too much although some say that Ice Bolt sticks more than Ice Blast when it comes to slowing down enemies. :ninja:

I guess it doesnt really matter...

the skill has 15 sec cool down.. usually when u're 1v1 soloing, the mob is usually killed by the time the skill has finished cooling down...

Exactly. If you get to use this spell more than once you might need to rethink your damage setup (wand over staff, INT/SPR points, etc).

that's why the guy who isnt a mage doesnt know anything.
Then again, my mage is only 43, so I dont know anything >.>
But I know some stuff, because I have some high lvl mage friends though.

i was simply posting a theory based on observation... i assumed that, since ice blast took time to cast but worked a bit better, and icebolt was instant-cast, they could be used alternately. that's all.

I have both on my hotkey bar, but I switched ice bolt with the place of my ice blast, but I mostly use ice blast. It seems to make the enemy slower then ice bolt, and it's a flashy skill ;)

I understand that too. Over time, however, as you progress in level, Ice Blast Will out damage Ice Bolt (Around LVL 2 Ice Blast, right now it seems like they do close to same amount of damage as LVL 8 Ice Bolt/LVL 1 Ice Blast). Instant cast is nice, but after a while the damage just isn't that good and you start not to mind the casting time as much on Ice Blast for more damage.
