Dishes

One of my nephews is 11 years old. All he does around the house is clean up his messes in his room (he shares a room, so he doesn't do all the cleaning), and helps rake leaves. He's done the dishes twice, no wait, he did a few dishes... first time, he only did the silverware, second time, half the dishes, then went to "take a break" and never came back.

I personally think at 11, he should be contributing his help around the house more. But when I ask him to do the dishes, he acts like I'm asking him to eat a bug. I think the dishes are something simple for him to do, but really helpful.

I constantly tell my mom this, but she's got it set in her head that he is still "little", and not ready for house chores.

Do you guys agree?

Hessah 10-16-2008 12:19 AM

No one likes chores, no matter what age they are, and I believe your nephews are the rebel type? (Choose not to listen to you, just because...)

I've never dealt with / raised kiddies... so i dont know how / if this will work..

but what if you offer to do the dishes WITH him... like he can do the washing and u do the wiping?

I'm sure it sounds like a hassle, but it might be a nice way of easing him into the chores...

what do you think?

Hraesvelg 10-16-2008 12:55 AM

It's never too early to get kids doing chores, but you're going to have an uphill battle if the person with final authority (your mom) won't back up your play.

Yosei 10-16-2008 01:21 AM

True. Now that I think about it... it doesn't make sence. They had me doing this stuff at 9, he's 11 and they say hes too young o.O

Hessah 10-16-2008 01:23 AM

grand parents always adore their grand children XD

Luna 10-16-2008 01:27 AM

Nobody likes chores..of course..

Everyone is lazy though... Pfft..When I was 11...I faked major cramps (from puberty being in effect) just to get out of chores...sucks it only lasted for about 6 months T_T

Oh well..Anyways...Start him with rewards he'll love...(that arent super expensive) in exchange for chores being done RIGHT! As you progress, make him do more work for the same amount of reward (haha such as grinding WOOT LOL)

Tamashiiryuu 10-16-2008 02:47 AM

Do you use voice recognition software?

MikeyG 10-16-2008 04:36 AM

I think what he does is enough, my three cousins dont do any of that and ther e 8 11 and 13. Heck all I do around my house is unload my dishwasher and make my bed. Imo hes doing enough after all hes still just a litte boy.

Hraesvelg 10-16-2008 04:49 AM

Do you think domestic skills are something that is innate? Like all skills, they should be taught and taught early to be most effective.

Esen 10-16-2008 04:51 AM

Hmm... Don't really have an opinion. I do think he's old enough though and it's not like doing the dishes is difficult.

When I was young, about 8, I wanted to do the dishes for some odd reason I don't remember. My mom wouldn't let me though since she was afraid I would drop things. I also would rather clean parts of the house when I was bored back then. I didn't do much, swept here, swept there, wiped the tables; just simple things because there was nothing else I felt like doing. Then I grew up a few more years and found new hobbies, haha.

Hessah 10-16-2008 04:53 AM

Yeah well, I dont do anything at home either, coz my mum never asked...

but i'm spoilt as hell and its probably not a good thing for me coz I dont know how to do anything

I personally think its a good practice for them, and learn to look after themselves... after washing dishes, he can help with te laundry, and cooking, and vacuuming XD

Loveless 10-16-2008 05:02 AM

When I... we were younger my mom would set up a chore chart. We would keep track of how many chores we did and at the end of the month got an allowance for it. Each tick equaled 25 cents.

That being said my brother never did chores unless we forced him to. Even then it was better off if we did it ourselves... he was and is still the baby in the house at age 16.

Destrus 10-16-2008 06:21 AM

<_<... >_>

/doesn'tdochores

i can't wash dishes, they're gross D:
i can't stand the sun for more than 10 minutes at a time, i'll melt, heat like kills me D: + all the bugs and spiders and stuff ;_;/nomoregrasscutting
vaccuming is possible but that just doesn't happen enough in my house xD
my room's always a mess :x
if anybody even tries to get me to do a bathroom they'll be instadeath'd:hulksmash:

Hraesvelg 10-16-2008 06:46 AM

All I can say to the guys in here that are ducking chores...you'll get laid a lot more if you have a clean pad. It is in your best interest not to be too much of a slob.

heh, this may come as a surprise, but i'm not really looking to "get laid" any time soon. i don't have time/don't feel like being bothered with any other commitments right now and a one night stand seems pointless to me.

Loveless 10-16-2008 07:00 AM

Well I just hope that when you do find that girl you want to impress... that you'd know how to clean up your place. O__o

Destrus 10-16-2008 07:00 AM

i know how to clean (i think), i just choose not to xD

Hraesvelg 10-16-2008 07:01 AM

You might want to learn the old axiom "You play how you practice."

Destrus 10-16-2008 07:03 AM

well, i do have to clean up my room before my parents come every break (except one break i just said screw it) and i usually do a good job... though my parents still think it's messy but parents just have an unrealistic expectation of cleanliness:smarty:

HAHAH!!! OMG That sounds so much like me :sigh: including the standing in the sun bit... >.>

LOL@ Loveless :cheeky: HAAHHAHA

Plunger 10-16-2008 08:30 AM

I never had to do chores but my brothers who still live with my parents have too...Hahaha I'm glad I moved out before that era.

Yosei 10-16-2008 03:42 PM

I clean when I'm bored ._. unless the house is destroyed, then I dunno where to start, then I just say "screw it", and go back to my room. I've always been a clean and tidy person. I just feel more relaxed if things are clean and put away.

Seriously.

Although this is in America...

Over in Germany I saw many families that did everything for their kids...

They've got the concept of do everything for their kids, then when the kids grow up and have their own families... the kids will end up doing everything for their kids!

See the cycle?

I absolutely HATE washing the dishes so much.
I despise it.
I have no idea why. Seriously washing the dishes..uggh.
I would rather wash my dog and my dog is like afraid of water and wants to get out whenever hes in the bathtub.
And for some odd reason, my legs get really itchy whenever i wash the dishes.

HAHAHA!!! Sounds like you're allergic to washing dishes to me! HAHA

i'd prefer to wash dishes over cooking any day!

Yosei 10-17-2008 12:11 AM

My arms get all itchy when I do the dishes, my mom thinks I'm allergic to dish soap.

Hessah 10-17-2008 12:25 AM

then u should wear gloves...

Loveless 10-17-2008 04:25 AM

It's not allergies per se. It just means that these companies should be more aware of the environment and the people. In other words, stop putting dangerous chemicals in things we use to wash dishes. D:

Hessah 10-17-2008 04:35 AM

hmm my mum was "allergic" to dish washing detergent... and she didnt look after her hands and kept washing the dishes bare handed...

the skins on her hands started stuffing up... it got so bad that she couldnt even do finger prints for her HK ID..

so look after ur hands! coz the stuffed up hands looks pretty gross...

Loveless 10-17-2008 05:00 AM

Yeh, my mom always wears gloves now. It's a must. >D

Bao 10-17-2008 05:04 AM
