Twilight (Possible Spoilers?)
Since I had been hearing a bit about this book called Twilight by Stephenie Meyer I decided to buy it one day. The cover of the book was intriguing enough and I had passed by it several times in the bookstore wondering what it was about.
Long story short after logging off Fiesta I decided to read it a bit before sleeping. What the bad choice that was. I ended up staying up the whole night finishing the book in one go. I just couldn't put it down, the suspense would've killed me if I had stopped! So I just came back from the book store, walked several blocks with 3 thick books that rivaled Harry Potter's last book. Two of which were hardcovers (seriously they should just throw out the paperback without going through with the hardcovers). I don't normally read chick lit as a matter of fact I don't read it period but this was great. The romance was definitely there but the suspense what an addiction. So if you're on the fence of whether you should buy it or not... you should. Or you could try waiting for it at the library too. Apparently there's also a movie coming out in December according to Sagarra. :3 That'd be interesting but read the book first, it's always better anyway to leave things to your imagination? |
I think the movies are going to be disappoint... :goaway:
Book 2 is angsty. Not as good as Book 1. Middle part of Book 3 is major angst too. Couldn't handle it so I had to stop reading. But the rest was good. |
Movie shall be shit.
|
My friend is giving the movie a chance and since no one else who's read the book wants to see it, I'm going to keep her company unless she changes her mind.
Books are usually better (and will most likely be in this case too), but probably won't read the book until Spring. /can't drive to the library without a license When my friends were reading it, I wasn't interested, but I usually give things a shot if they attract a large fan base. That's how I started reading HP anyway. Will probably not read the other books in the series. Most people I know didn't like them so... /shrugs |
Yeah because 203948290843 pages without Edward is boring. Then Eclipse was.. I dunno..
I liked Eclipse the best, to be honest =\ |
I read the first one. It was very disappointing.
|
Honestly.. I don't understand how any grown man could like it. I heard that there are fathers who like the series and I was just.. surprised..
|
Book 1 in my opinion at the least was very good. I mean it did keep me all night reading it. I don't usually have high expectations when it comes to movies anyway but I like seeing books come alive. Same with my favourite manga turning into an Anime. Just a different way to look at things perhaps from another person's POV.
I've kind of realized that the book... the story in general is angsty but hey, what love isn't at one point or another. Seems a bit more realistic anyway than Prince Charming sweeping you off your feet and you live happily ever after. I know several reviews say it was a disappointment but it's easier to criticize than to come out and say you liked it. -shrug- I started reading because it had a pretty big fan base too. Just a reminder though this is in General Discussions. @A_For: I kind of agree with you on that, it is a romance afteral. But the storytelling itself is good and there is a good bit of suspense. |
Book 2 and 3.. Bella is just a complainer. She was in 4 too, but there was so much to keep track of you didn't, well I didn't, really notice.
I really wish she would just finish Midnight sun >.< She stopped writing after finishing the chapter BEFORE the meadow =((( |
I heard so much about this twilight book but never read it.
Doesnt it have like, 700pages?-_- It's not that i dont like reading its that i never find a good book besides the ones my teacher chooses for our class which are usually really great books. Maybe its becuz i judge a book by the cover and the first page |
Umm. I think the first book has 495. Second one in the 500's. 3rd one in the 600's and the 4th one in the 700/800's? xD!!
Yeah. I have mine stacked in my room from 1st-4th and it looks cool. Haha. |
You're right, in the fact that it probably does have to do with the age and gender factor. There are certainly books that I've found my opinions changing over the years. I never really cared for the Harry Potter books, either. The impact they had of engaging tradionally non-readers into picking up a book was good, but I didn't care for Rowling's prose. Ah well, to each his/her own.
As for Twilight, having read a lot of vampire literature before that point, I saw nothing really new it brought to the genre. Vampire romance is as old as the hills. I've been meaning to pick up the Southern Vampire series by Charlaine Harris. Vampire rights as a thinly veiled metaphor for gay rights sounds like it has potential. I also hear they're making an HBO series from the source material. A "young adult" series of books I recently read was the Uglies series by Scott Westerfeld. I'd suggest picking it up if you have the time. I've only read the first three (just saw on wiki there is a fourth one), but they're rather well written and explore themes that resonate with teenagers/young adults. |
i dont like books that continue,
it doesnt give me that feeling of "ARRRRRRRRRGH, I WANT ANOTHER BOOK" |
Were there four? @_@
*always thought it was a trilogy* |
now you know its a quadilogy

Yeah. I read the Uglies series last school year.. As did my brother. We really liked it, but thats because we like books having to do with dystopias.
Right now though, I'm really into the Blue Bloods series >.<' I think I like it more than Twilight. Its by Melissa De La Cruz. |
Midnight Sun? So is there like a 5th part in the making? -wonders how think that is going to be- I went to the book store thinking I'd be getting 2nd and 3rd too... until the store clerk passed me 1 more. That was quite heavy.
Blue Bloods series huh? I'm guessing a vampire story as well... that'd be interesting to read. But in terms of the page numbers... I don't think it's really that big of a deal? I mean the font size is fairly large compared to what I'm usually reading anyway. @UserName: I know what you mean but even a series will make you want more when it comes to an end. That is if the author is good and leaves some things to the imagination. Might be why people say movies are bad, it's the director's interpretation of the book where you probably had another POV. I'm just glad I didn't see the HP movies so I won't be stuck on the actor that plays Edward as Cedric. :3 |

Can dl the draft here and read about why she isn't finishing it: http://stepheniemeyer.com/midnightsun.html Yeahh. Its like Gossip Girl meets Twilight LOL. Ralath likes it too >_>' |
Hmm,
What is the series about anywayz? If a book is good i can get hooked easily=] |
For a few movies about a book/book series, I can appreciate the movie if I think about what would my opinion be if I had not read the book or if there was no book to read. This is assuming the movie was not just a bad movie in the first place.
For those few movies, I can definitely say the movie was good or even great, though I still enjoyed the book more. Like Loveless said, it's fun using your own imagination. Movies also often have to or choose to leave things out or change a few things due to issues with how long the movie will be or something, which I would only notice because I read the book. Never had much interest in stories with vampires before to be honest. Also went through a brief period where I was just tired of them completely when I was in high school. Which was odd as I didn't really read many things that focused on vampires in the first place. /shrugs I think Twilight will be the first (for a book). I'll pretty much read anything now as long as I can endure the first five or so chapters, assuming the book has a slow start or something. Sometimes I'm end up enjoying the rest of the book, whether I find it great or simply good is another question. I remember giving up on one book back in high school, and now I wish I didn't. |
That's the best way to view a movie based off of a book. You have to really appreciate the difference of how you can tell a story in different media. Its really hard to obtain that level of objectivity with a work you're particularly fond of, though. I really hope they do justice with the Watchmen movie coming out.

I think it is a book you can get hooked into but again it really depends on taste, doesn't hurt to try though. I don't usually read or I haven't read fantasy-ish genre since grade school (dragons, witches, etc) and had stuck to strictly more probably stories such as forensics, CSI-like things.
The first couple of pages will start off like any story a bit boring with the introductions... but once she meets the vampire things will get interesting. I'm already half way through the second book. It's good to be on a break, otherwise I wouldn't have gotten any homework done. .__. Something I do when I pick up a book is usually see the cover, then the title... then I'd open up to a random page and read it. Since the climax is around 3/4 of the book if that seems interesting enough I read the rest. I did like Harry Potter but... after the 4th book Harry was kind of getting on my nerves and the first few chapters didn't get me hooked enough to finish. |
Twilight:
Loved it. Amazzzinnnggg book. New Moon: Eh. Twilight was better. Eclipse: ...Um... Why did people wait for this? Breaking Dawn: Re-arranged worded from http://www.fanfic.net. = = Movie: Edward looks more gay than ...hm... let's just say, he's the thin version of Rosie O'Donnell. |
The book wasnt bad honestly, but I thought the sparkling part was too... out of the normal story line of vampires. It's not that I dont have an imagination (... you have no idea xD ) but sparkling... in sunlight.. where where I draw the line. =P They can survive sunlight for all i care aslong as they dont sparkle.
But the obsessione veryone has with the book actually disgusts me so much Im not even able to read trhough new Moon. I might in a few years, when people get over it and move on. Besides that the book isnt bad. The plot is a bit obvious... to me. But it's still interesting and a good book to read. Even if your not into the whole vampire thing. If you like fantasy or sciencefiction or just have a open mind you prob wont be able to put it down. The obsessed people just got to me so i cant even pick it up. u.u.. |
Obsessed? .__.
I agree with you on the sparkling part. While I was reading I was like "...... LOLWTF??!" Of all the things that could've happened he sparkles. I'm just getting into the third book. The plot (now that I've read 2 of the books) is a bit too obvious but the suspense is what keeps me reading. I agree with some of the critics where I believe the author could've pushed herself more to do something more extraordinary but I suppose she's just starting out and it's always easier said than done. Overall I do love the series, it's a good read. |
HEY! I finally made up my mind to read the series too a week ago LOL. I just finished the third book. They're really good, but everything is so ... mushy. Bella needs to get a life and she also needs an epiphany. Book 2 was pretty disappointing, but I did like Jacob a lot lol. Third book was alright also, but it gets a bit too mushy again. And I really recommend the Uglies series too! I like action and distopia/utopia novels, and the series was really suspenseful. The fourth book is a bit strange, though it has some pretty funny moments LOL. |
Yeah, Bella definitely isn't my favourite person. Makes me want to slap her at times... :/
I'll try the Uglies then. I seem to be on a book reading roll now... (then it fades for another xx years). |
You all should try Blue Bloods too. :x
