Regarding Gustav

For the record, I've decided not to leave. I'll probably be without power, so if I'm not heard from in about a month, think the worst. I say a month because with Rita we were without power for about 20 days after the storm hit. Just for reference, the closest town likely to be mentioned on a newscast is Lake Charles, LA.

Spirit 08-31-2008 01:41 AM

Yeah, I have been watching it. Looks like you are gonna take another direct hit.

kirbysprite 08-31-2008 01:42 AM

/question

What's Gustav? A tornado?

Ralath 08-31-2008 02:00 AM

Kirby, meet Gustav.

Gustav, Kirby.

It's pretty bad...I have a feeling it's going to be worse than Katrina =\
I really don't want to go through all this again...

Pritcher 08-31-2008 04:33 AM

Good luck. I have family in the path too. At least one I actually care about in Florida too, but it looks like he's just gonna get grazed. I have an Aunt in Corpus Christi TX as well, she might get slammed depending on how it goes, I don't really know her though.

a.L 08-31-2008 04:45 AM

Good luck to everyone in the area.

srabble031 08-31-2008 06:37 PM

If it was level 4..it wouldn't kill us..However it's a Category 4
I feel pretty bad for New Orleans though. August 30th, 2005, Katrina devestated New Orleans and now September 2nd, 2008, Gustav hits...Ironic ey? (3 years and 3 days apart)

Hraesvelg 08-31-2008 11:15 PM

Eh, I should be fine as I'm on the western side of it. Trust me, I've been through my fair share. I've lived on the Gulf coast for nearly 30 years. The only one I've ever left for was Rita (which everyone seems to forget due to Katrina) and she hit just west of here, putting me on the bad side of it. Minimal property damage, no flooding. This one should be a walk in the park.

The only problem I see is that I've miscounted how many caffienated drinks I should have had on hand. I don't think I'll make it through Thursday so I'll be even more on edge. No power and no caffiene will end up working on my nerves.

Pangya 09-01-2008 07:01 AM

Leaving.. Smart move.

I was listening to the radio and some people that lived in the projected hit zone were staying because they had pets/farm animals that they wanted to keep there... Crazy, delusional people...

Hraesvelg 09-01-2008 08:02 AM

Protecting property that people have worked hard to gain is delusional? I think its more delusional to give in to the mass hysteria that some people are getting about this storm. Hurricanes have been hitting the coast for hundreds of years and they've been known to do all sorts of unpredictable things. To uproot and evacuate for every one that comes along would mean being out of the area for months at a time. That's just not tenable. They've had "mandatory" evacuations from Mississippi to Texas for Gustav. Its insane the amount of fear this thing is generating. People need to take a deep breath. If someone is directly on the coast and/or in a low-lying area, sure. They need to go. And those people know who they are. As for the rest of us? We should shutter the windows, get some canned food, and suck it up for a few days until power is restored.

Edit: At least I'm not doing what these crazy guys are doing:

http://thestormreport.com/livetrack.php/

I think they've been up for too long. Their commentary is getting really weird.

Spirit 09-01-2008 02:28 PM

Looks like right before landfall it was downgraded to a Cat. 2, but the difference in wind spped is only 5 miles per hour, so no big change. I saw Lake Charles on the news and other than wind and rain, it looked like it was surviving. Hang in there and have fun JT. Hope you don't lose power. THey aresaying the biggest threat is going to be flooding and the storms created because of Gustav.

Lady-Loki 09-01-2008 04:55 PM

It is still serious and scary when you consider the distance between the ends of the red line (Galveston, Tx to Gulfport, Ms) by lat/long distance is approx 350 miles (+/- any small amount).

And the blue is a rough idea of where Hrae is at.

Hraesvelg 09-01-2008 05:03 PM

We still only have a light breeze going on. It'll be about five or six hours before it gets close enough to be felt here, and by then it'll be just a good, hard storm. We might not even lose power at this rate.

Do eeet.

Hraesvelg 09-02-2008 03:33 AM

I swear, watching the national news you'd think we were nearly wiped out again. I heard not 20 minutes ago a complete tool on Fox News (Shepard Smith, big surprise) that LC is supposed to get 24 inches of rain overnight. Er, hello...look at a radar map. The rain bands have passed. Some stations like that are scaremongering and then the others (like on the Weather Channel) are nearly orgasming over it. Weatherporn freaks.

BuzZzKiLL 09-02-2008 04:10 AM

and whoooos the one that sed itll be fine xD xD xD i was scared on my 1st hurricane then the 2nd one came, then the third then the forth, by the 2nd one were like wtf another one, this is stupid now, we went 2 months with no power. thats y i was walkin in em, they dun scare me in the least, unless i was near the coast.
