Admin woes
Okay, so for about a year now, I've been strolling through Wiki pages, and having had the sysop privileges for almost as long, this is the first instance of this kind of occurance annoying me.
http://www.fiestafan.com/forums/phot...assiveSpam.gif :zomg::zomg::zomg::zomg::zomg: This bot is pro. In a period of 2 minutes, ... I don't even want to count how many spam attempts it made. The most annoying thing is most of them spawned new pages. This is why: http://www.fiestafan.com/forums/phot...backFailed.gif SO I clicked on every single entry via the Recent changes list and manually deleted all those pages. Took quite some time and made my index finger hurt. Triumph, where the hell were you. :hulksmash: Is there anything that can be done to prevent this kind of attack? IP blocks won't work. It happened today, it will definitely happen again. Next time, your self-proclaimed Wiki Head Admin Triumph will do the honour. This is a rant, but it definitely belongs to the Wiki section. |
Wow, some people are just a waste of human life.
Great work, Icy. Take a Vоdка break, you deserve it! xD |
Wow, you fixed it all. GREAT JOB!!!
Now, just relax, you deserve a one month break... or something... Good Job, Icy! *gives a thumbs up and smiles* |
Wow... I guess we're so good that we now get hack attacks by professionals.
I'm guessing FiestaHQ. Or could it be... Outspark? :lost: |
Can we just restrict access of who can edit the Wiki? (Ie. Only people who have registered.)
|
People could still just register a bunch of accounts, then spam up the wiki.
How about a time restriction on edits per hour/minute? If possible. |
Holy crap.. they nuked the wiki lol.
|
Well if it's a bot, I'm sure it has plenty of time on its hands.
However, if we did added an image identification portion to the registration...? |
OMG you had to fix all that manually?!
-pat on Icy's back- |
Good job Icy... -gives alcohol-

And poor Icy! -patpats- |
Remember, Icy...with great power comes great responsibility.

A good idea would be to restrict the ability to create new pages to registered users only. It is easy to revert changes by simply going to the user contributions page and clicking revert there. Getting rid of pages involves 6 clicks in total, plus a lot of mouse movements... I'm thinking uhhh, perhaps it's time the wiki should have a software update. No more alcohol please, I'd be drunk :uhoh: |

Its not too hard for a bot to register then create new pages too right?
maybe make creating new pages for only specific people, like FF Mods + Wiki Admins... + anyone else who we know and trust and needs the ability to create new pages... most of the time we only need to edit existing page anyway.. right? |

Soooooooo can we have that restriction please :o |

You can ask a forum admin if I was active more than once during that time period, or an accidental click and subsequent 30 minute period of inactivity. And what, you expect me to sit and monitor every waking hour of the day? :goaway: |

<-- no clue. |

That wouldn't be me. Would it be Triumph? He's not answering you on that, LOL. If not Triumph, then I'll forward this thread to Entropy?

Being a slavemaster means I sit in bed daily.
And eat. And do no legitimate work. Aha, I will do that now. |

I LOL'd at this thread.
By the way, you all have forgotten Ralath's suggestion: image verification. I don't think bots are sophisticated enough to be able to "read" the texts in the randomly generated images yet. It is an awesome anti-bot feature, I believe. |

The step is unnecessary for registered users. That would work, but the wiki software needs to have the feature. |

That is nothing compared to my abusive admin star. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...n_star.svg.png |

Omg, your icon is more über :cries: |
Image verification is good but in the case like what happened there I'm sure the bot would be able to handle the image verification. There are a few that can work trough it. I would do something around the line of Edits require image verification, New page requires registration + 10 edits of 24 hours. Basically, to make new pages you have to edit 10 pages and those edits be unreverted for 24 hours. This would limit the ability to make a new page to those who have proved they are not spamming. There are very few reasons to make a new page but I have done it a time or two when the page did not exist or I just did not look in the right place.
Now, did someone say something about a slave revolt? Hum... guess I missed that memo. Why don't they tell the slaves anything? How we supposed to revolt without communication with each other? It's hard having a slave life. P.S. Great job on the rings page Icy :) I like how it turned out. |
How about something like this: show an image and they answer via multiple choice what it is, or something like "Complete the pattern" type of thing. It will give some much needed exercise, (JK) and prevent bots from spamming, since they have no brains at all.
|
If you try editing any of wikia's pages, you'll find that it requires image verification if you included an external link. I would like some feature like that in FiestaFan's wiki, seeing how all the spam point to external addresses. It seems the consensus surrounds image verification.
And Triumph here's a hammer + sickle to pwn the likes of you http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d8...IFs/Soviet.jpg |
