Something else I don't get is the lock.

it's the pad-'lock' looking thing by the side of the chat-pane?

keeps the interface in place or usually does.

Guess I was right... It doesn't do it's job though.

the lock prevents you from moving your chat box and your notice box...

you cant drag/move if the lock is down...

but the log is "unlocked" everytime you relog
