Yeah I actually didn't know India has the population of China but in even less land space...

Ashame to say.. but I would've said Indian too even though we have so many Indians in my area.. I guess we kinda got it mixed up to like Italian and French where the nationality is also the language...

Thinking about it more this is interesting, it's like Chinese, is a nationality and a language but the dialect is mandarin and cantonese and shanghaiese etc etc...

So can Indian be the "language" for a collection of all your dialect? or it doesnt work that way at all?

No, not at all. Almost all of our states speak separate languages. Sometimes, even within the same state different languages are spoken in different areas. Hindi is the most common, but only barely. There are a few languages that are similar-ish like Hindi, Marathi, Gujarathi and Urdu, but they can't really be classified as dialects of the same language.

I guess it's understandable though. I'm not angry or anything, but it's just surprising how little is known about us despite the fact that we're everywhere haha. I'm probably just as ignorant about African languages.

So does that mean when you travel to another state you can't communicate with the people in another state within the same country?

indeed you guys are everywhere LOL If I was friends with some Indians from school I'd probably know more keke actually There was only 1 Indian that I recall in my grade, most are actually Sri Lankans..

Well, Hindi, or often among the younger (<40) generation even English is a common ground language. But yeah, communication can be difficult. It's not just the language though, often even the culture changes wildly. About the only thing that remains constant is the currency LOL.

For people who settle down in other states, they usually end up learning the language. That's why the vast majority of Indians are really multilingual, For myself, I tend to "think" mostly in English rather than my mother tongue Telugu.

It can also be a curse though for obvious reasons.
