Lolita could mean any of the things people have listed above me for a GM to change it as it being *offensive* would be grossly unfair. I could see if it was some racially charged name or a sexual innuendo but its not.

I still contend it originated with the novel. Why else would the term "lolita" be associated with cute, young girl fashion? I'm still not finding it offensive, I just don't think that its a coincidence that the terms are the same, unless I'm missing some sort of Japanese lingual basis for the term. I really would be interested in reading your findings, although I can't fathom how the exact same word with such a similiar meaning could arise in two such diverse cultures over such a short period of time. Keep in mind the novel was written in the mid-50s, and at the time caused quite a bit of a stir. It wasn't obscure by any means.

Lolita was originally a name, and now a term because of the book. The Japanese word Lolita is indeed a loanword from this, and the word Lolicon is a shortening of "Lolita Complex".
