Oh, I didn't mean to say that this was exactly a 'drama'... a bit of "discussion" never hurts. I only say it might cause drama on the officials there because the Lolita guild will probably frequent there.

I'd imagine they will be upset if they see this (heck, I would too if it was me) so I guess pm'ing is the way to go if you don't want to get flamed. D:

lmao @ that. Made this whole worthwhile. As far as Lolita, I don't find it offensive, but I'm pretty nearly impossible to offend anyway. At the least it isn't overtly offensive.

[QUOTE=Hraesvelg;38992]Lolita is a reference to Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov. In the novel, an adult becomes sexually obsessed with a twelve year old girl. Quite a stunning example of 20th century literature. However, in recent times, the term has become more or less shorthand for the object of underage desire.

It's a must read, but you probably wont be able to find it in your high school library. It's another one of those classics that's been bastardized by Americans into something that it's not like "Brave New World." Our parents and grandparents decided back in the 60s that the material--when taken literally, or out of context--is inappropriate.

I didn't, however, realize that Lolita was a Japanese dress. Learn something new every day i guess!

Yosei 11-07-2007 04:51 PM

Lolita can be a lot of things =\

Tadiakichi 11-07-2007 05:17 PM

Everyone's thinking of lolita complex....

+Tequila+ 11-07-2007 07:15 PM

Because its not offensive unless read into like you're doing besides shouldnt you be sending this information on Outspark forums? This is'nt really the place to complain about offensive names. You should: 1: ) Make a post on Outspark forums 2: ) Pm [Gm]Steam/Kalaan ingame and last but not least 3: ) Stop making the name into something its not. Lolita could mean any of the things people have listed above me for a GM to change it as it being *offensive* would be grossly unfair. I could see if it was some racially charged name or a sexual innuendo but its not.

Hraesvelg 11-07-2007 10:02 PM

I still contend it originated with the novel. Why else would the term "lolita" be associated with cute, young girl fashion? I'm still not finding it offensive, I just don't think that its a coincidence that the terms are the same, unless I'm missing some sort of Japanese lingual basis for the term. I admit, the Japanese are a total mystery to me. Tentacle rape porn? Used panty vending machines? Fish egg ice cream? Seriously, WTF?

Tadiakichi 11-07-2007 10:16 PM

Tentacle rape porn is not Japanese culture. And each ethnicity has their odd quirks, not Japan alone.

Lackluster 11-07-2007 10:18 PM

Lolita isn't only for girls...it is also a fashion for men.

yes, the word was born in the book. There is no arguing that fact.

Yosei 11-08-2007 01:09 AM

I disagree. Lolita may be a way something is pronounced in the Japanese language D: Until I find out.. I can dispute it.

Hraesvelg 11-08-2007 02:59 AM

I really would be interested in reading your findings, although I can't fathom how the exact same word with such a similiar meaning could arise in two such diverse cultures over such a short period of time. Keep in mind the novel was written in the mid-50s, and at the time caused quite a bit of a stir. It wasn't obscure by any means.

Yosei 11-08-2007 04:16 AM

There IS someone named crip_killa on Fiesta lol.

Lafieru 11-08-2007 04:23 AM

Quote:

The term originated in the 1955 novel Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov where it was the nickname given to the young girl, Dolores, with whom the narrator, Humbert Humbert, has sexual relations. [1] In the book itself, "Lolita" is specifically Humbert's nickname for Dolores, and "nymphet" is the general term for the type of young girl to whom Humbert is attracted, Dolores being one of them. In the novel, Humbert defines nymphets as being between the ages of nine and fourteen. However, commerce has preferred to use the girl's name, and to make "lolitas" attractive (in film adaptations and pornography) to a much wider audience than the small number of "nympholepts" which Humbert believes to exist. In the novel it is noted that the "nymphet" in a group of schoolgirls would not necessarily be the "loveliest" one in the group.
Lolita was originally a name, and now a term because of the book. The Japanese word Lolita is indeed a loanword from this, and the word Lolicon is a shortening of "Lolita Complex".

Yosei 11-08-2007 04:28 AM

Well if you want to be more specific, Loli is actually from Lolicon(Rorikon), which is from Lolita complex. Can't forget lolicon! lol

Lackluster 11-08-2007 05:16 AM

Lolicon....*cringes*
