I didn't give you the hint, but I'm betting they were referring to a lot of the pieces being in stickied threads. After I found one in a stickied thread I just systematically went through the forums checking all stickies.

I got told off and came back with the star going hoping that would make a difference... but nope.. i'm still a lowly human being

What were the badges for?

They were proof that they had passed the appropriate stage and were eligible for the next part, so that someone couldn't jump the line, as it were. They had to go to the correct "NPC" in the correct order.

Just a heads up - I will be removing the pieces off the site soon. So for anyone who hasn't checked this thread yet and were curious about the location of the pieces - go look now!
