you cna connect your cable modem to the router and connect your computers to the internet through it

Routers are hooked up to modems. (Modems are hooked up to routers.. whatever)

They allow you to have more than one computer/system connected to the internet. Like right now, we have two computers and an xbox 360 connected.

They forward information(i.e. the internet) to multiple things..

Its honestly not complicated. Its all straightforward when you get one and follow the step-by-step instructions of hooking one up.

A router will not replace your modem.
