Are you using Photoshop?

If so select all go to the menu under Select > Modify... > Contract by 1px
Then inverse selection and hit delete to get rid of extra pixels around the characters.

i like using the magnetic lasso, easy and does a lot of the work for youx]

i had already started going over it with a size 1 brush so i decided to finish that way. the wings were still a pain in the butt though

a little progess. thinking now i might switch the background around. hadn't thought about the glows before but i also haven't done the stuff in teh middle that i want to try.
