There are quite a few terms for cattle, but cows are always female. There's a whole section on cattle terminology on wiki, if you'd like to know more.

LOL!!
I guess as a kid.. from Asian we learnt that Cow = 牛 which doesn't specify wat gender the animal is... |
And yet, we have 他,她,and 它 just to make sure we know what gender we are talking about.
=o= |
Well, cattle is kind of an odd case in English. There aren't any gender-neutral words that can be used in the singular for cattle. A cow and a bull together can be "two cattle", but each one would be referred to either as cow, heifer, bull, steer, calf, etc.
Now, that's not to say if you see a field full of cattle someone won't say "Hey, look at the group of cows." That's not proper or correct, but it is common. So it bring in even more confusion. |
I tottally thought that black cows were bulls, whether it be girls or boys. But I thought cows that werent black, were just cows. I was oh so wrong, appearently.

Sounds like one of my ex-girlfriends. We were driving out in Texas and there was a very large herd grazing, mostly brown and a few black cattle. I pointed out the huge herd, and she said, "Those aren't cows! Cows are only black and white!"
I had to explain the difference between dairy cows and beef cattle and the various breeds, and that she was talking about Holsteins, a type of dairy cow. |
