It use to be that more schools started the day after Labor day so a Labor Day celebration was more like a last attempt to grab some summer fun - not really celebrating that summer is over.

These days, however, many schools start back in early August so the end of summer celebration thing is less applicable but because it was the case for so very long it is still referred to that way.

Technically it was a holiday created through the organization of some labor union/s and is suppose to be the day we celebrate the accomplishments of American workers and honor the prosperity of North America. However, if you research it you will find that the US followed suit w=ith canada on the time for this recognition while most of the world celebrate similar for May Day. And I think it all started further back in Australia with a movement to get 8-hour workdays.

Now, Labor Day in the US has lost most of the traditional association and is simply viewed as a long weekend.

Oooo... yeah i just see it as a long weekend too... our labour day is in October... so that's got nothing to do with summer...

but then again.. not all states in australia has labour day at the same time.. (i think 2-3 other states have it in may or somewhere earlier in the year)
